Hi all, first posting here, just bought a 2000 V40, dealer loaner, the price was right and I like the car, but I have two questions?
First, can you open the rear hatch without the key in the lock (ie just by pushing the button) or does the key have to be in the lock? (Dealer swears key needs to be in the lock to open hatch, does that mean the trunk button on the key fob is useless?)
Second, is there any option for a CD changer (not fm modulator) that doesn't cost $700?
Any thoughts or opinions appreciated...just starting to worry I should have waited till I could afford the extra 5K for an S60

the key does not have to be in the trunk to open it. you simply need to press the remote trunk button twice to unlock it. then press the button on the trunk to open.
can't help you with the changer.

Sigh, well my hatch only opens with key, I think if I turn the key to the right as the manual says it should open with the keyless entry, but my dealer says nothing is wrong. I don't believe them as why would there be a trunk button on my key fob if you can only unlock the hatch with a key.
Now what do I do? If the dealer won't help how can I get it fixed?

i have driven both the S40 and the V40 and i can assure you that the remote unlocks the hatch. tell that jack-ass dealer that you called Volvo customer service and they confirmed this. also, bring the owner's manual. finally, ask him to demonstrate on another V40 that he has on the lot.

gizwomack,
The V40 hatch will open without the use of the key! You just need to make sure that the hatch is not in the key-locked position. If it is in the normal position, it should open with a second press of the unlock button. Either there is something wrong with the lock mechanism, or your dealer is smoking something.
-Drew

Thanks to all who replied! I took your responses (along with a video taken at a neighboring dealer of the V40 hatch that worked) to my dealer and they replaced the lock. It works perfectly now!
(Now all I need is a CD changer and some roof rails :)

gizwomack,
You took these responses and a video at the neighboring dealer? That is great! I love it when people take action. I am glad that your dealer replaced the lock for you, because you sure did show them who was right!
-Drew
