Hi All,

Has anyone tried using the DiCE as a J2534 interface with other SW or vehicles? Out of interest I installed a trial version of ScanXL Standard - and I was able to connect to my Volvo, the DiCE was detected as a J2534 interface. You just need to set the "Interface Type" to "J2534" and leave everything else the same (assuming you have DiCE drivers installed too).

The trial version has lots of stuff disabled, but I was able to read engine RPM in real time, and a load of other possible parameters to read came up, but they were all disabled due to only having the trial license. This type of SW is a lot lighter than VIDA, and has a little better support for just run-time stuff like logging/graphing.

I don't have another car to test with to see if it works, but perhaps if it uses the same bus as Volvo it would work?

Regards,

-Colin

Yes, the DiCE interface is a J2534-2 compliant device and supports the CAN, ISO15765 and ISO9141 (K-line) protocols. Volvo has also added some proprietary J2534 extensions for communication using Volvo specific features. For example, the DiCE can communicate on both the high-speed and low-speed CAN bus found in newer Volvo vehicles, generic J2534 devices only have one CAN interface.

Software such as ScanXL should be able to use the DiCE as a generic J2534 device and pull the usual OBD2 information but any Volvo specific information would still require Vida. I have written software which communicates directly with the DiCE via J2534 to sniff the CAN busses and send commands to the modules. It works as you would expect a J2534 device to work, figuring out the Volvo extensions is harder though :)

As far as I can tell Tunerstudio is made for communicating with Megasquirt using RS232 at 9600bps, but if someone writes a special plugin it is theoretically possible to use it for anything. (Even playing MP3)

I'm looking into data logging and I am hoping after a year since this thread there is a bit more info. I was also linked from this thread which was left unresolved....

So I'm looking at buying this DiCE which comes with VIDA 2013A.

1) Has the ability to pull up logs and graphs after the fact been figured out or will I need the ScanXL software?
2) I assume I still need Windows XP SP3.0 for VIDA?
3) Is there anything else I'm missing in order to log AFR, timing, IAT, air flow, and engine speed at a reasonable sampling rate?
4) Am I lucky enough that there is a G sensor built into some safety system that can be logged as well?

Thanks

Time to bring up this thread :) So I've tried using DiCE with ScanXL pro and they don't seem to quite click. So in ScanXL connection settings I've set the correct port and interface type to J2534, when I press connect I do see the DiCE blinking the blue LED, then steady blue LED, so it does get connected, but the ScanXL doesn't get past the "connecting to vehicle" window. Tried changing the baud rate to no avail. Any hints how you got it working?

P.S. My setup is a bit complicated, but works perfectly with Vida: macOS with VirtualBox where Win7 Pro is running with Vida, original DiCE and bluetooth connection.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is connecting via cable instead of BT .
