I was looking hard at a new V70 2.5T (see my earlier posts) but came across a used V70 R in Texas that sounds like a good deal. 2004 with 25k miles, asking $27.5k. Black with tan interior. bought in 9/2004 (he must have gotten quite a good deal so late in 04) so the warranty is only half over.
A few questions:
1. what differences are there from 2004 to 2006?
2. the seller said it was loaded except for navigation, but I noticed that it doesn't have rear parking sensors (no big deal) and doesn't have the remote child locks (would be nice). Both were in the 2006 V70 R that I test drove today.
3. The 6 speed autobox I drove today was pretty slick. (The 5 speed in the 2.5T was also very nice.) Did the 2004 V70Rs have the 5 or 6 speed auto?
4. How hard (or expensive) is it to fit the roof rails to the V70 R (which all seem to come w/o rails).
5. Is there a Volvo enthusiast in the Austin, TX area that can check out this car for me? Since it's under warranty, I'm not worried about mechanicals, just the condition of the paint and the interior.
Eric Lee
Monterey, CA

Re: used V70 R vs. new V70 2.5T (E34M5)

Here are a couple of answers to your questions.
2006 was the first year for the 6 speed auto transmission in the R.
The R All Wheel Drive system in 2006 has InstaTrac, the 2004 R does not.
2004 does not have body color moldings as 2006 does - but with a black car this is barely noticeable.
Roof rails can be added to the car easily by a dealer.
William
Also, park assist was not available as a factory option on the R in 2004 but can also be installed at your local dealer (though I am confident that it will run you a good amount of money). The biggest difference by far between an 04-05 I think is the GT trans. It's a 5 speed on the earlier cars, but they switched to the 6 speed from the xc90 v8 in 2006. This brought torque up from 258 to the full 295 the manual trans cars always had. Also, you will notice a revised center console and a second generation dolby surround audio system. Other than that, the car has by and large carried over. Either way, I can only imagine that if you are interested enough to be on the website to begin with you will enjoy the R more than the 2.5 T. Hope this helps...good luck and let us know.

They look like they would be an easy install, but I don't really know. I bought just the cross-bars for about $160.00. They plug right into special brackets hidden on the roof and are very easy to install (or uninstall). I didn't see any good reason to get the rails. My Passat had them, and I was disappointed that my Volvo didn't have them, but actually I'm pretty happy just using the cross-bars. My only complaint is that I can't get low-profile bars. The ones I have stick up pretty high. Also, I had to buy them from Volvo as Yakima and Thule don't make them, but the price was reasonable. You might want to check and make sure the '04 has the brackets. I'm sure someone on this forum will confirm it for you.
