Timing belt on '98s and earlier was 70k. Other than that, you may be looking at motor mounts and then some items that may need to be replaced depending on how the car was driven, like brakes. Ask for service records because you may be spending some dollars bringing it to stage "0" condition. You may want to have it checked out by a mechanic who specializes in Volvos.

+1 on the service records.
JRL--are any of the items you listed "emergency" items? Doesn't sound like it. Might be able to take them at your leisure (other than the timing belt, which of course is critical.)
Rear main seal is also a regular culprit on these cars, so check around where the car is regularly parked for oil spots, etc. This is a $15 seal that requires a $1,000 labor to replace.

The FULL tune is obvious also a new coil on a 98 works wonders (MSD coil from IPD) http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
The breather box and vacuum lines can be checked, if good it can wait a while
(All the lines and my BB are original on my 2000 but check out perfectly. I have I Seafoamed my R though.
Brake lines can wait if they're not cracking
Battery cables can be load tested etc. if bad they will show low voltage.

is it smart to replace all lines associated with the turbo?
so far my important/check list :
timing belt (replace)
front end suspension (check) (shocks are really the only thing ill be very concerned with ill buy springs and endlinks.... what else?)
breather box (check)
Rear main seal (check)
coolant flush/brake flush (how expensive is this or is it an alright DIY?)
trans flush .....??

also i know volvo owners/buyers usually place alot of importance on service records. what exactly do i need to ask for? im new to this so i want to make sure i dont make any mistakes.
and what do i need to do if the seller can't provide service records?

Basically, it would be nice to know that you're not doing something over that's been done recently, or to verify what the owner is telling you.
Would be nice also to know if any components, like an A/C compressor or a heater core have been replaced. Records would tell you if the PO kept up on the maintenance, or was a slacker. This might be predictive of trouble down the road. If it was dealer-serviced at Volvo, you might be able to get a partial service history there. JRL would know more about how well that works, I've never tried it with a Volvo.
Basically, if you do all the aforementioned checks and renew/replace the aged and wear items, you're going to cover pretty much everything anyway - "Stage 0".
As part of your suspension check, pay attention to the upper spring seats.
They go to hell on these cars, if it sounds like an old sailing ship when you turn the wheel or the weight shifts, that's probably it. You gotta "go deep" to replace these things, that would be strut-replacement time.
Ball joints/ties rod ends too, however at 80K you're probably alright, unless they're really salted and immovable or worn.

ok... this might be repetitive but what are the aged and wear items?
is this anything like when people buy the xc90 spring seats as replacements?
and then how do bad spring seats lead to strut replacement?

P.S. : no one has said waterpump yet? is this something that would have been done well before now?

Sorry... fluids, hoses, belts, electrical parts, etc., etc. (I could make this a song!)
Nothing mysterious, just the normal stuff you would do on any used car you buy, especially if you don't know whether it's been done recently or not.
Exactly, and if you're going to do it, would be logical to do the struts as well.
Not without doing the timing belt too - so if the belt was done, hopefully the pump was, unless they went cheap. If not, then you'll be doing timing belt/water pump "while you're in there"...

ok kinda still going off topic and into mods but o well but do that many people do aftermarket struts(how much money about?)? or OEM when replaced?
PS whats a good site to find wheels with the s70 bolt pattern
tried tirerack and discount and it seems like the selection is not only limited but kinda poor

I have gotten good sets of rims at good prices from some of these wheel sellers on eBay, believe it or not. I bought a set of Honda alloy wheels for my daughter's car from a wheel seller dirt cheap, he said they were perfect and they were. Of course, there's the shipping, but shipping wheels is never cheap.
Otherwise, just watch the Volvo boards for guys wanting to sell, I guess.
