My unit has recently gone nuts. I dont have an ipod, I only have it for the hardwired aux input. Anywho, for the past few weeks, the unit will be playing fine, then all the sudden, 95% of the sound cuts out from the passenger side. It's def not the head unit, because I can easliy switch it into fm modulator mode and the sound is fine.
I've traced the problem to the connection of the main connector on the unit itself. If I jiggle the connector, the sounds comes back to the passenger side. Anyone else experience something similar?
I really hope it's just a matter of swapping the unit. If the problem is in the cable, that means I'm gonna have to remove the head unit again. That will not be fun because it took me forever to get that thing back in the dash with the bluetooth wiring.
Of course, an email to usa spec went unanswered.
Tim

Contact whoever you bought it from. That's probably what USA-Spec will do anyway. Good luck!

Hi
I have the same problem with the adapter !
So you are not alone :-(
I think it's the cable that connects to the HU .
// Mike

From Discountcarstereo
2005 08 30

Re: USA spec problem (falerum)

I have installed 18 of these units...
The last three (PA-11) have all had this problem...
I have called the owner of USA-Spec and left a message on his cell, but no reply...
For some reason the PA-10 upgraded software models didn't have this problem...
I will update if anybody gets back to me...
Crutchfield (uncharacteristically) has been NO HELP...

Re: USA spec problem (dugums)

Wow, I'm not alone. Unfortunately I've had mine for a year and 2 months. Just out of warranty. I bought it from Crutchfield. Mine worked fine for a year, then started doing this. I'm pissed.
I dont know if it's the cable or not, but I don't think so. I think it's the connector on the unit itself. It did it again today, and when the normal wiggling of the cable at the connection did not work, I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Then it worked again.
I'm gonna call Crutchfield and see if they are willing to help. Who knows.
Please advise if you hear anything dugums.

Re: USA spec problem (t6tim)

So... Bad news here:
I was told to return them to crutchfield... I asked if the problem was fixed... They said there was no problem....
I asked if it might be the cable... They said there was no problem...
I asked if there wasn't a problem, why I would want to return 3 of them... They had no answer...
So I guess my customers are sort of SOL... They are going to remove and return them, I'll let you know (eventually, as it's an intermittent problem) if their new ones are OK..
I'll keep mine, as I don't feel like being without it for even a few days.... I don't mind jiggling the cord for how infrequently it has an issue... It only happens about once every two weeks to me....
Can't wait till the swedespeeder who engineered the other one starts selling them!!!
I'll have to start installing those for my customers...

Re: USA spec problem (dugums)

Well, I don't think Crutchfield is going to take mine back as it's been over a year.
I'm gonna have to move my box to the glove box to jiggle it. Right now, I have to pull the side panel from the pass side of the dash and jiggle.
It happens to me at least once a day. I have a system in place:
Sound gets screwed up, then I pull the phono plug for the direct output and use the fm modulator. God I hate the modulator.
Thanks for the update.
Tim

If it's out of warranty, open the box to see if there are any broken solder joints on the board or a broken wire in the cable. Shouldn't be too difficult.

I'm wondering if everybody here who is having this problem could post when and where purchased.... I'd like to compile this data so I have some ammo....

Re: USA spec problem (dugums)

I had a similar problem when I first installed my US spec in the S60, but in my case I was getting the insert cartridge message when I selected cd changer. It turned out the connector wire into the USA spec unit from the HU was a little loose and the vibrations of driving kept popping it out. I solved it by very gently squeezing the metal sleeve on the connector until it was slightly oval and then pushing it back into the unit - the pressure exerted by the metal being forced back into the connection holds it nice and snugly so no more lost cartridge. This may help your lost sound problem too - if the connection to the HU isn't tight it might cause your units to misfire so to speak..

Re: USA spec problem (t6tim)

Well,
The prob has got to a point where it does it several times daily. I called Crutchfield Tech and they advised the units carry a THREE year warranty. Crutchfield.com product screen says the same. They referred me to usa -spec. I called, gave the lady the date I bought it and was e-mailed a return auth. form.
I shipped it to them today.
Will advise.
Tim

Re: USA spec problem (t6tim)

t6tim -
Sorry, I should have posted a follow up...
I was able to get all of the adapters replaced (even the ones I thought were out of warranty) free of charge (each owner paid shipping.)
I didn't bother tearing into any of them...
Re: USA spec problem (t6tim)

10 days door-to-door for the one customer I got details from... Not sure if it was more or less time for the others.
I never ended up returning mine. I got a replacement cable which did the trick for me.
