Volvo Cars reports 7.4 per cent global sales growth in the first nine months

Oct 03, 2019 ID: 258886

Volvo Cars maintained a solid sales momentum in the first nine months of the year, with global volumes up 7.4 per cent, compared with the same period last year. The company sold a total of 507,704 cars during the period.

Europe, China and the US all reported a steady sales growth in the January to September period, with Volvo Cars consistently growing faster than the industry, thereby gaining market share across these regions.

In September, Volvo Cars sold 64,536 cars, up 6.5 per cent, compared with the same period last year.

The first nine-month performance was supported by the continued strong demand for Volvo Cars’ award winning SUV range led by the XC60, followed by the XC40 and the XC90. The company’s latest models like the V60 estate, the V60 Cross Country and the US-made S60 sedan also contributed to the increased volumes.

The company’s sales in Europe reached 247,610 cars in the January to September period, up 6 per cent compared with the same period last year. The growth in the region was led by the performance in the United Kingdom, up 19.3 per cent, compared with the same period last year. German sales grew 24.8 per cent in the first nine months, compared to the same period last year with the company’s subscription offer, Care by Volvo, now trending around 6 per cent of the total market’s volumes.

In the US, Volvo Cars continued to buck the industry trend, by posting a steady sales growth in the first nine months. During the period, Volvo Cars’ US sales increased 4.7 per cent to 77,432 cars, compared with the same period last year. The top selling models for the company in the region were the XC90 and the XC60 SUVs.

Volvo Cars’ sales in China reached 109,512 cars in the first nine months, up 13.8 per cent, compared with the same period last year. The solid performance in the region was on account of continued strong demand for the locally produced XC60 and the S90 models.

A detailed break-up of regional sales is given below:

Globally, the XC60 continued to be the top selling model for the company in the January to September period, retailing 145,629 cars (2018: 134,975 units), followed by the XC40 at 95,475 cars (2018: 48,543 units) and the XC90 with sales of 71,830 cars (2018: 70,329 units).

Car market not-so-great in the US, and poor in China. Volvo still looking good in both places. In the US it's the XC90, XC60, S60, and the XC40 again. All the usual suspects.

XC60 suffered a huge drop in September in the US, interesting but disconcerting...
There were some pretty great incentives on remaining 2019 XC90s that might have made them a better value story than the XC60 for a lot of folks - I think US buyers will always go bigger if price permits. While I have yet to see any sort of heavy discounting of XC40s and maybe dealer stock is still an issue, I'm still a little surprised how its sales numbers look - I thought this model would at least be on par with, if not surpassing, the XC60 or XC90. Definitely thought it would sell more than the S60 at the very least.

But not the XC90. It's one of Volvo's best sellers. And the V90 and S90 sell well worldwide.

lol. The entire 90 series needs to be canceled.
Or...Maybe Volvo needs to step up their advertising program.

I’ve owned a variety of cars in the last 55 years. I’ve never had so many strangers approach and ask questions about my car as I’ve had since driving my V90. Recently had a guy in a new M-B follow me for a couple miles, when I reached my destination, he pulled in next to me and asked a bunch of questions. He had ZERO knowledge that the V90 series even exists.

He sat in the driver’s seat for a few minutes and was very impressed by the aesthetics of the exterior and interior design. I know wagons are a niche market in the US, but perhaps Volvo is missing a segment of potential customers by doing ZERO advertising of the best wagons in the world.

Just one opinion.

FWIW.

Plenty of subaru wagons are still sold in US.

Volvo even didn't broadcast an ad saying "wagon is back". Instead, VCUSA only gives very limited options for V90CC, and don't offer stock of V90 at all.

I just find it...odd.

Our V90 T6 Inscription is just an all-around excellent car, not plain, not simple.

Uhh.. Volvo DID step the advertising. The did it through a crazy looking opera singer in front of an SUV? :WTFBBQ:

You're literally citing 1 "datum", in the middle of nowhere of PNW, where wagons rule, where #1 wagons are shiiiiity lil Subies that cost 1/2 as much. The entire 90s series needs to be killed, as does the S60 sedan, especially thanks to Mr. Trump's dumb AF "trade war". FWIW, my neighbor has a SPA S90, my other neighbor has a SPA V90, the neighbor down the block has a V70 T5, and across from her the neighbor has a SPA XC90 (just like me), but I also live in a liberal AF town where the median income is ~$90K and bleeding blue.

Anyway, kill the made in China S90 because Murica hates this car.
