Reading up on the "refreshed 2007 S60" on the Swedespeed homepage, it states:

Quote »

Increased driving pleasure with advanced chassis.
In order to highlight the car's sporty nature out on the road, the standard chassis has been further developed in a number of areas. Firmer shock absorbers and springs front and rear increase the car's torsional rigidity by about 25 percent. The anti-roll bars are also sturdier than before and the bushes are solid, which together promote a harmonious balance between reassuring road manners and supple ride comfort.

"The further-developed chassis makes the S60 even sportier and more enjoyable to drive without compromising on comfort," says Gerry Keaney.

Now, this is my question. If the springs, anti-roll bars, and "solid bushes" are used in the 2007 S60, are these individually or as a group retrofit-doable in our R cars? Would the springs fit? Are the 2007 S60 spring rates a bit more than stock R springs? Is ride-height the same?! Are the sway bars thicker than current stock (and will they fit?), and what is a solid bushing?!

The answer to our issues for tweaking may very well be in the 2007 S60 parts-bin that Volvo now has. INTERESTING...

Thoughts?

I don't see how suspension can add torsional rigidity..

Untill the car rolls off the line with the parts installed, I wouldn't hold my breath for what the PR sayes.

They are probably talking about the springs+roll bars. With both, 25% increase in rigidity results...??

Are the parts bin from the S60's "generally" the same size as the R's? For example, are the diameters & length of springs the same? If so, one could theoretically swap them, and get a stiffer spring as the standard S60 does not have 4C...make sense? This would allow for a stiffer spring WITHOUT a drop and consequent issues w/alignment.

Yeah, that's probably what they mean. However, torsional rigidity is usually reserved for the body structure itself. They should say "roll stiffness" if that's what they are talking about. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

I'm guessing they were talking about the S60 in general and used the upgraded R parts in place of the older ones for the '07.

I think he only means the strut-brace, Johann.

Hmmmm.....could be. Anyone know the part numbers and/or more details on what's going into the '07 S60 (non-R) car particularly for the springs & sways?

Re: Upgrading the 2004-2006 S60R with 2007 "refreshed" S60 parts (Helmut Ranff)

Just resurrecting my old thread. Does anyone know (yet) if the MY 2007 R cars have DIFFERENT springs (spring rate change, etc), sways (thicker), etc than the 2004-2006 R cars?

I actually contacted John at Boston Volvo. He said that his parts system does not allow to get specific information regarding the part, just it's number and it's applicability to a particular chassis by selecting that chassis number (in the VIN).

I am interested in this as well, if someone with good techs out there could possibly ask?

Also, does anyone know the stock V70 spring rate vs. the R's?

They won't know, no one will know except perhaps a couple of engineers over in Sweden

Re: Upgrading the 2004-2006 S60R with 2007 "refreshed" S60 parts (ljjones)

IMO, the only way to detect that something has changed is via the PART NUMBERS of the items. If the part #'s for a 2007 S60R sway bar(s) and/or 4-springs are ~different~ than the same items for a 2004-2006 S60R, then we can possibly surmise that the parts are "improved".

So, does anyone know if the part #'s for a 2007 S60R car are now in the system/VIDA?

They are in the system, but it's not that easy. I don't want to butcher what John emailed me, I'm sure he'll chime in here.

But even if we knew they were different, we wouldn't know HOW they were different. Only those couple engineers in Sweden know.

Of course they will be different but, as I said, NO ONE will know the exact spring rates.
This goes for almost all cars, the people in the dealerships have no idea.
The only way these things are found out is when someone gives their car to a spring company who wants to make springs and even then it's usually a well kept secret (for the competition).
The only way you will find out is to buy a new S60 spring and to buy an S60R spring and have them compared in a race shop and guess what, buying a Volvo spring is not so easy.
When I wanted to buy T5 front springs for my S60AWD, I had to find a T5 and give them a VIN. You just can't ask for an S60T5 (or any other) spring, they have no way of finding out the proper one to order
without a VIN
Of course there never was a (02) T5 around when you wanted one, took me a month

And they are having enough difficulty getting consistent results with the suspension components they are using.
