Could any of you point me to images of an unlowered AWD S40 or V50 with 18" wheels? Perhaps in the owner's gallery?
I'm aware that the AWD vehicles sit a bit higher, and I just wanted to be sure that larger wheels on my unlowered V50 won't make it look like some sort of bigfoot wagon.

Re: Unlowered AWD with 18" wheels? (Mayor Sizzle)

sorry major , but visualizing an unlowered awd with 18s "Big Foot " came into mind. I would lower it first then add 18s but if you don't lower it , I wouldn't go to 18s. the amount of tire profile should be about the same or more than tire to fender gap. so while a non lowered awd with 205 55 16s might look to some still reasonable switch to a 215 45 18 and yes visually "Big Foot" will come into mind.

Since the overall diameter of an 18" tire/wheel combo is identical to the 17" tire/wheel combo, why would it look any higher?

Re: Unlowered AWD with 18" wheels? (Dede)

With increased wheel diameter and maintaining the stock tire diameter , we reduce the profile. a 195 65 15, 205 55 16 , 205 50 17 and 225 40 18 all have a outside dia of 25" +/- .1 inch. however visually if the fender gap vs tire profile ratio is too high, it will appear that the ride is too high. (even if the distance between the OD of the tire and fender remains the same) the larger wheels need more of a drop to reduce this visual ratio of tire sidewall vs fender gap. don't believe me , switch out a car with stock 195 65 15s with some 225 40 18s and everyone to include people who don't know jack about cars (to include 65 year old nuns ) will say "it needs to be lowered" by upgrading the diameter, you disturb the tire profile to fender gap ratio. meaning a car with larger diameter wheels NEEDS to be lowered more if it should have a sport appearance.

if you disturb the tire profile to fender gap ratio enough, dont you have to get a software update for your odometer too?

Select tires of the appropriate size and you are good to go.

Volvo recommends 215/45/18s with its Medea wheels as opposed to the 225s. Though that's a subtle difference and I doubt it would affect the look.

LawnGnome, thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to see: an image of what it would look like. And I agree with you, it does look fine. I'm sure some folks would want to see your car lowered, but your current set up is by no means obnoxious or incongruous.

I also have 18"s on my unlowered S40 AWD -- they look great, but would definitely look better with a slight lowering (30mm). I'll post photos ASAP...

Who cares about ride height? Honestly it's safer to have some height above the road. I love watching people in low cars go over speed bumps at school. I always know when a car is too low when I see lower air dams hanging off under the car. That car is not high at all. My Explorer is high, that certainly is not.

I'm getting my 18"s put on tomorrow, and my lowering springs won't be installed for about a week (I'm going to be away for work). I'll shoot some pics and will try to post them this weekend.

Re: Unlowered AWD with 18" wheels? (surfer_bill)

Surfer Bill, thank you. That was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have the same model/color vehicle, and I'd inspected images of your V50 before when I was contemplating the Evolve grill. Now that I'm considering 18s, it's been helpful again. Oh, and what sort of tailpipe tips do you have on there?
