Back in 2015 I swapped my engine due to pressure build up in the cooling system. Recently I have the same issue in my second engine, so I decided to strip down the engine (as a novice following this tutorial: http://atthetipwebs.com/technologyinstructions/head_gasket.htm).

Now that the vale cover is off it seems to have more dark oil residu (burned oil) on the right side compared to the left side (where the VVT's are, see picture). Is that normal (or perhaps indicative of insufficient cooling)?

(2015 engine swap tread: https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?230903-2006-T5-engine-in-2004-V70R)

Looking forward to your thoughts,

I think my 2.3 t5 looked pretty similar at 150k miles when I had my cover off. Make sure all your passages are clear. Clean what you can, and look for scoring/wear to cams or journals.

Driven 40k miles since then I pulled it to replace my valve stem seals.
