OK, I got the Typhoon intake and decided that underhood snokel thing isn't really necesary as all it did was cool the battery. So I removed it, thinking the (open) Air filter would benefit more w/o it, and perhaps even the ECU might even get some more cooling w/o it. While I was at it I removed the foam underhood heat shield..
do we even need this? anyone else do this? any problems?

Re: Under hood heat shield (V50_T5)

The heatshield is also used to put out fires if it occurs in your engine bay. I believe when it gets hot enough, the plastic clips should give away and the shield should smother the fire which should limit the damage.

Re: Under hood heat shield (1SOUL)

I carry a fire extinguisher in the trunk so no worries there for me. I removed mine about a month ago and havent seen any adverse effects. Supposedly makes the turbo noise more noticable which is why most do it but i couldnt tell much of a difference. Just didnt care enough to put it back on yet

Re: Under hood heat shield (V50_T5)

IMHO the ONLY real purpose of the underhood insulation has is to reduce the tempurature of the hood when the engine is shut off and the heat from the engine rises. Keeps the paint from fading as fast and no longer matching the rest of the car.
Most engine fires I've seen cause MASSIVE damage in only a minute, especially on today's vehicles. Anybody ever see an old V W Beetle burn? Whole car would burn to a crisp in only three to four minutes.

Hood insulation is really just sound insulation to muffle the sound of the engine.
The paint on the hood will get freaky hot just sitting out under the hot summer sun...even if the engine has been completely ganked clear out from the engine bay.
That all said, possibly the most ludicrous application for hood insulation would be as a fire blanket to put out an engine fire. Suffice to say it can't. Using a wee bit of logic and studying the rigid hood insulation which doesn't yield to flopping down when it gets hot and its plastic fasteners which are made from the same plastic as the vast majority of the other flammable plastic bits on and around the engine and one'll see that it's quite useless as a fire blanket. In fact the hood itself, when shut completely, will mitigate an engine fire better all by its lonesome simply by limiting the flow of air needed to feed a growing engine fire.

Re: (Dextrobrick)

I removed mine a couple months back. No issues, but no real noticeable difference either. I'd say just leave it in, but either way it is super easy to put back in. I am like Kyle though and just haven't spent the 5 minutes to do so. No real weight gains, no noticeable sound difference to me, no real point besides aesthetically better looking if your heatshield is dirty (Which you can just clean and put back on.

Re: (carreragt7)

If i get the hood painted with the lip kit (giant bare spot where the blanket goes) i wont bother putting it back on. If not i might just because the unpainted spot under the hood looks kinda crappy.

Yours is unpainted? I think mine is painted...I'll have to take a look, maybe someone took a pic with my hood up from the GTG.

Theres a big bare spot right where the blanket goes. You can see the overspray where they just didnt bother painting the whole thing lol. It looks like a factory primer underneath with a hint of black around it

Yeah, it was gorilla tape. The gelcoat got messed up badly when I was doing a fiberglass molding of them and instead of showing up to the Seattle meet without any front lip I figured what the heck, people do stuff like this on road trips, and I am technically on a road trip, so I taped them on. The whole 14 or so hours on the road they were perfectly fine. Not the best looking, but the real things are amazing.
