Ever since Michael (MyNameIdeasWereTaken) posted the comment about making the C70 AWD, it’s gotten me thinking. What would be the penultimate build of a P1 C70?

I would look at taking a ‘13 Inscription and swapping an M66 into it, along with the P1 AWD components (and Haldex 3). SmartTOP would also be a no brainer. I’m a bit “meh” on the Bilstein B6 struts and H&R springs I put on the ‘08, so what upgrades for suspension, brakes, mounts, etc. would you propose? What else?

Looking forward to the comments!

You'll want coilovers if you go AWD, so you can dial in a perfectly level stance without swapping in a bunch of different springs. I'd highly suggest KW, as they make some of the best coilovers you can buy will ride as smooth as stock suspension.

M66 conversions are a bit complicated. But what year did they stop bringing manual C70s to the US? Or did they continue for the whole production run?

There are a few people who have done full K16 builds on the C70, so I would consider that to be well paired with an AWD swap for an "ultimate" build. Though if you're like me, that's pushing the boundaries of too much power for this chassis and the roads I drive.

M66 and AWD would be great, but not sure if it's possible. As I understand it, the 2011-2013 C70 has the same chassis as the pre-2011 C70. So theoretically, I guess an M66 swap is possible. What computer/sensor changes would have to be made? I have not been able to find a definitive answer to this riddle.

Hilton Tuning say they have the answers to the manual conversion questions. You might try here: https://hiltontuning.com/product/volvo-manual-conversion/

No affiliation, haven’t done this myself, etc....

just had my C70 up on the lift yesterday and looked for the room for making it AWD also :p it looks like it is room... now... the C30 AWD builder have shared a good amount of information... so i guess i just have to see what is happening here and if i can get a hold on a AWD s40/v50 parts car sometimes up the line to convert the car ;)

Last time I was under a C70, it looked identical to my other FWD P1s. So everything should bolt right now.
I'm not sure if the C70 has any difference in trunk clearance for the fuel tank, but it shouldn't be too hard to fabricate something around that, if that's the case.
Let's make an AWD C70 happen!

I have started looking for a S40\V50 AWD car for the swap. it is allmost impossible to find one in Norway\Sweeden... unbelivable... and i guess it only came with T5 AWD combination, and those were expencive for a small car...

just checked my 2007 modell. it has the same fueltank as 2007 s40/v50 so that makes me belive it all should bolt on this car also.
the DPF and DP is also the same on C70 as S40/V50 so that also leads to the tunnel should be the same yes :) now i just wonder... the wheelbase is slightly different between C70 and S40/V50 i think, i think the C70 is slightly wider in the rear? not sure where the width is coming from, if it is the wheelhub\trailingarms or something?

The chassis is the exact same, so all the threaded hole and alignment points will be the same. My only concern would be any parts of the body that may be slightly different due to the roof mechanisms.

If I remember right, the C70 uses the same rear subframe. The difference is just a ~5mm spacer that sits behind the hub. So if you used an AWD rear subframe, you'd just need to run a 5mm wheel spacer if you wanted to keep the same wheel offset. But with how many people have aftermarket wheels, which generally have a more aggressive offset already, this wouldn't be a problem. There was an old thread about this somewhere on the forum, as S40/C30 people were adding the C70 hub spacer to avoid running wheel spacers.

AWD was only an option for the T5 (did the D5 get an AWD option too?), which means only T5 C70s can easily be swapped to AWD (due to transmission and transfer case).
So finding a donor could be challenging/expensive depending on the country. We only got the 2.4i and T5 S40s and V50s in the States and our C70s and C30s only came with the T5 because the T5 is 50hp faster and more fuel efficient, so it only made sense to sell the T5 from a marketing standpoint.

GOOD POINT... ****... D5 with AWD is a shot way gone then... T5 convertion at the same time... hmmm...

C70 D5 2007 with 5 speed auto partsnr: 36050341
V50 D5 2007 with 5 speed auto partsnr: 36050341
V50 T5 2007 with 5 speed auto partsnr: 8251852 (EU), 36000850 (EU), 8251831 (EU)

wow. thought the automatic transmission would be the same on T5 and D5, but no.

sure those are not the same bolt patterns to bolt on only output ratio different?

V50 2007 T5 m66 partsnr: 8252159 (EU), 36001862 (EU)
never came a D5244T8 manuall... hmm

This probably doesn’t help any, but a friend of mine sent me this spec sheet for the C70 options that were available there. (I asked him if there was ever a T5 M66 for 2011-2013; no, but a couple of M66 diesel options; scroll to the bottom to see): https://www.autobild.de/marken-modelle/volvo/c70/typ-m/p.2/

Maybe next year I can start the AWD build with my ‘08, although ideally I’d like to have the ‘13 manual swapped and AWD. Not sure I’d truly have the time for this, but would at least have another car at my disposal while doing it (last kid will be out of the house then and not driving the XC90).

Not useful as not for sale but just out of interest, there are often up to four V50 T5s including mine parked on my road in Stockholm, and at least 2 of them ive noticed to be AWD so not to uncommon here.

Just to let you know - IT'S OFFICIALLY DONE :)

2007 T5 C70 M66 with K16 HYBRID TURBO / AWD swap with Haldex3 and aftermarket Ecumaster ECU which will add constant 50/50 balance between front and rear :) As well as many more modern software options (ALS/ LC / 2 step). There are also front and rear Quaife LSDs for S60R :) Reinforced driveshafts and many more :) It wasn't plug and play install though. My trunk had to be modified to accomodate rear axle (photos on my IG stories).

Right now engineering is done. It's going for Ecumaster ECU install, and then some software tuning :)

Here you can find some pictures. I even renamed my car's instagram account to match above :)
www.instagram.com/ultimate_c70

Next step is widebody and bigger brakes (since I can't fit them with my current concave wheels). I also will focus more on interior (Recaro CS etc.).

Yes, we have MOT. But I guess it's more simple than in other countries. So if you knock to the right door it'll be fine:) Basically decat is the biggest issue here. But some MOT testers doesn't check that. I'm more concerned about insurance. But I think I'll just keep my head low at this one :)
