How wide are the wheels you're using? 205 or maybe 215 will fit on a 6" wide wheel. 225 on 6.5" 245+ on 7".

225/50/15 on 15x7 wheels will work. That's what I'm going to use when I get the wheels.

I've got 16" X 7" Epsilon rims on my 240, and I'm running a 225/50-16 Kumho Ecsta Supra. I had to beat back the rear fender lips to prevent rub. The fronts are fine.

195/60 is stock for a Turbo/GT rim, you can go to a 205/55/15 (which can be slightly difficult to find) but you'll get a slightly shorter, stiffer sidewall and a little more tread width. We did that on the 245GLT and it helped steering response over the old 195/60's. Also seemed to lessen oversteer.

I've seen people run 17's on 240's, but I can't think you'd get more than a 205 under there...perhaps a 215/40.

Personally, I think I'd try to run a set of the 740/940 16" 5 spoke wheels with a 205/50/16 or maybe a 215/50 (which are also nearly impossible to find). I don't know if you could fit a 225/50/16 under the rear without having to do some fender lip rolling or not.

225/45/17 or 225/40/18 can fit on all 4 corners of a 240 with rolled or cut fender lips and proper offset.

There is a place in MD that will take those steel Volvo wheels and replace the rims with wider ones so you can get more meat under the car and retain the stock look from the outside. It's great for making people take a second look just before you disappear around the off-ramp at speed, stuck to the tarmac like glue.
The name of the place is called Ye Olde Wheel Shoppe. Unfortunately, I can't remember where it is. One of the guys in the club did this operation with his 544 sport and said they did a good job.
