Typhoon Intake Strut Bar Disaster!

1537 Views 17 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Mach_T5
Recently installed a K & N typhoon intake to find it rubs on my strut bar. After a few days with some cardboard wedged in to prevent damage (ghetto as hell, I know) I finally just took the strut bar out while I shop/look for a solution. Ideally I would like to not have to buy a whole new bar but if someone knows of one that definitely fits with the typhoon intake I am interested.

what strut brace do you have? I had the EST brace and the fix that worked for me was to bend the Z shaped bracked that attaches the intake to the back side of the block and bend it a little bit to give it enough clearance. its not hard to do at all. If I remember correctly the EST brace was tighter then the OEM brace so this should work for either.

I had the same problem. If you have the OEM strut bar like I do, this was my solution.

I cut about 1/4 inch off the end of the intake where it connects to the turbo hose. I cut about 1/4 inch off the center mount post. It now clears the strut bar by about 1/8 inch.

I had this exact same problem , I added washers , first just 1 then 2 and I ended up selling my OEM 3 day old bar 1/2 price to a fellow swedespeeder, because I couldn't get the rubbing to go away. (sans ghetto methods you mentioned) Enough of the front strut bar! until... the EST bar came out, hmm everyone said it doesn't rub with the Typhoon ha ha it did... however not nearly as bad and bending the clamp holding the pipe fixes this, yeah it'll take you then an hour to finally get the screw in the hole after bending the clamp, but it's a "quick" fix

I have the same problem and, since I am a cheap-o, I am going to try adding an additional nut under bar on the posts to hopefully raise it high enough. If that does not work, it may be time to shave down the tube.
Thanks for the tips guys. I do have the OEM strut bar and I think I'll try a little bending and if that doesn't work I'll start cutting.

And it never touches? Under load, the engine rocks backwards, I would think the top of the tube would touch, at that clearance...

Tom.
You could put some grease on either part and see if any transfers to the other part after a drive... That'd tell you if they touch.

It did at first when I only cut the end of the tube. I thought leveling it out would solve the problem. It did until I would back up and the I would hear it hit. Thats when I cut the center post down. Now it doesn't hit at all. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Nice engine bay http://********************/smile/emthup.gif and no to change the original issue about the strut bar but a quick question what are the 2 blue boxes at the end of your strut bar. I do not have the bar but I don't remember my car being like this.

Thanks. I need to clean it. Haven't ever cleaned an enigine. I have always be afraid of getting water somewhere it shouldn't be.

Those came with the strut bar and were black. I painted mine.

It was part of the sport suspension upgrade. Also heavier gauge anti-sway bars and stiffer springs.

I bought mine at my dealership for 100 Euro. I'm sure you could get yours to order you one if you like. You will defiinitely notice the difference on high speed cornering.

From the stickied post at the top of the forum:

Details, part number, pics, instructions, etc.

I've never seen those plastic covers before, though.

End result: I cut down the center post and put a little strip of padding on top just in case (and to cover the rubbing that had already occured.) Looks sleek and no more grinding!
I just left out that center post mount on the intake. No rubbing, no problems since I installed over 2 years ago.
Re: (cicatrizdare)

I took the center post mount out and put dynamat between the strut brace and intake. Works like a charm! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
