Hi- I have a 1989 245 and my turn signals stopped working all of the sudden. The stalk operates and clicks in place as usual, and the hazards work fine (both flashing and clicking), as do all other lights. Fuse checks out OK. Please help, I'm tired of sticking my hand out the window.
Thanks
Bill

Re: Turn signals stopped working (billbosh)

Welcome (back) to Swedespeed, Bill.
It has been five years since the brakes failed on your 245 and we have not heard from you since - that's good news for an "old" Volvo!
If you get tired just from arm signaling might want to get a check-up...
As to the turn signals - if the failure was abrupt suspect an electrical problem.
Spin the fuse in the holder and/or install a new one. Does the fuse power other items?
Check all electrical grounds (loosen/re-tighten).
Since all other lights/functions are OK the wiring harnesses at the tail gate hinges should also be OK but take a look anyway.
Does your 240 have electrical relays controlling power window, etc.?
Turn signal switch failure is not uncommon on this model and the only sure test is to install a new (not used) switch.
Good luck.
George Dill

Re: Turn signals stopped working (gdill2)

Thanks for the email George.
Looks like I won't be signaling out the window for awhile- today the power windows all failed. It looks more and more like a wiring problem. I guess I'll have to break out my multimeter.
The fuse for the turn signals is also used for the EFI system and seat belt light (both of which work).
The car has been taking care of me and my family for 6 years now, but I only drive it once a month or so, and it clearly needs some TLC.
Thanks
Bill B.

Look for corroded/failed relays under the dash/kick panels.
George Dill

Hmm. This wet weather finally subsided and all is working again. I'm going to give my electrical system a thorough going over when I get a chance.
Thanks
-Bill

Re: Turn signals stopped working (billbosh)

Normally it's a bad hazard switch that causes the symptoms you've described. You know the flasher relay must be good because the hazard lights work. The hazard lights and the turn signals use the same flasher relay.
The hazard switch is a double pole double throw and sometimes one set of contacts will work OK but not the other set. A simple test is to bypass the hazard switch with a jumper. Temporarily connect a jumper wire from the fuse to pin 49 of the flasher and I'll betcha the turn signals will work.
