Thinking about buying a 2010 Volvo S40 AWD R-design. Basically everything I'm looking for in a car. AWD, Turbo, 6-spped, Aesthetically pleasing. I had a fully built Stage 3 B5 S4 a few years ago and was looking for a similar thrill. While I think the Volvo may fall a little short there has to be potential in this thing somewhere. Is there a lot that can be done to these engines or very little? Just looking to get some ideas. Thanks.

Re: turbo upgrades (Cadiburns)

Anything that would give serious power gains, such as a turbo upgrade, will probably risk your warranty: On a brand new car I would be hesitant. If you were going for power I'd say buy an 04.5+ S40 that is AWD and a manual, because then you don't have the warranty issues. Spending $25-40k on a brand new car just to chance losing the warranty isn't worth it to me.
The turbo upgrade also costs around $3k, before the labor. It is a lot pricier to modify our cars than it is for Audi and other brands that have larger aftermarket followings. Hope this helps!

Re: turbo upgrades (carreragt7)

Modifying my Audi was certainly not cheap. And I understand your concern, thank you. I still want the option in a year or two to do this. I would keep the car mostly stock to begin with but I grow bored of my vehicles and upgrades are usually the next thing to come.

Re: turbo upgrades (Cadiburns)

I am not saying tuning/modifying an Audi is always cheap, but you will come to find out that anything available for our cars is more expensive than most other brand's aftermarkets because there is much less demand for Volvo aftermarket parts. A downpipe costs $1k, a decent tune (only a few options) costs $1300, a cat back or axle back exhaust $1k, etc. While I am sure there are plenty of companies for Audi that have the same ball park prices, I know there are a ton more options that include cheaper prices. Audi's aftermarket scene is huge compared to Volvo's.
Smaller demand equates to higher prices. Part of the reason a lot of us have our cars is because it is not a common car compared to some models of Audi, BMW, etc and people don't know what they are.
If you are looking for a monster of a car, the S40 really probably won't satisfy your thirst. But if you are looking for decent power, good mpg, good looks, and a car that you don't see 20 of every day then it is a good choice.

I doubt I scare more people off than I convince to look into Volvo, I've already got 4-5 people who want -and are getting soon- Volvos because of my car.
That said, anyone that is thinking of dropping money on a new volvo should know the aftermarket isn't as good as other aftermarkets. But if someone wants a car that not a lot of people have modified, the S40 is it. It is a lot more reliable than a lot of other cars, no major issues that I know of besides the PCV replacement under the extended warranty.

From what I've seen so far, the T5 engine does have alot of potential but falls short in that there is a rather limited market for performance parts, especially in North America. That being said, everything can always be shipped and anything can be custom made. I switched to my S40 from a rather extensively built MkIV GTI and am realizing that much of what I'd like to do to my S40 I'll be going custom.
I wouldn't not purchase an S40 because of what seems to be limitations, you'll just have to be a little more creative and errr... spendy in your build. Happy car shopping oh and pics of the S4 please!

Everything AJ said is true though. My boy Agtronic makes bolt on 600whp+ turbo kits for the S4 audi's for around 6k USD. All said and done just to upgrade our turbos i would venture to guess we would be around that and be limited to under 400whp haha.
The scene is definitely different based on the demand and suppliers out there. ATP turbo so far is the cheapest upgrade and that leaves out tuning and fuel which is rather important (3k)... it is the source of making more power Not to mention the 2k in exhaust, intercooler, and clutch upgrades also required. Once you figure out a tuning source and drop another 1k or more you have to install yourself otherwise that would be at least another 1k in labor

Nah. Those are the Euro headlights. Not cheap either. I think I spent more than an S40 on upgrades alone for that car.....and you can't even tell. LOL

I like it, good looking classy car. How was it maintenance wise? A lot of my buddies that have/had Audis (including a couple S4s) told me to be prepared to spend a lot of money on repairs as they had a lot of stuff failing on theirs. I almost bought an 05 S4 but got scared off due to everyone telling me they were too much work to keep in top shape.

Re: (carreragt7)

Things can get expensive. My last year of ownership the clutch went ($2200) and the interior wiring harness got fried somehow ($4200). After that, it was easy to sell. Before all that even, the stock turbos blew so upgrading to bigger ones was a no brainer. That was an easy 5k. The list goes on and on.

Yeah, that is similar to the stories my buddies were telling me. The consensus was they were super fun to drive, not so fun to keep running, LOL.

I love the Audi. It seems to me like you're quite the car guy. If that's the case, you don't mind spending a little extra bank to be unique and classy. I bet you'd be pretty pleasantly surprised with a T5. Go for it.

Staying up till 4am detailing the car for the new owner really shows your dedication to the car scene, and your appreciation for a fine machine! It also shows you really had a bond with the car and although you were selling it, you really were gonna miss it deepdown.
