Re: Turbo Upgrade... (Cicada)

R_Rated has a GT30 and Boosted will have a GT35. Both monster hair dryers.
R_Rated went with the GT30 because IPD had a tune for it. Boosted is having all of his stuff done custom by http://www.batlground.com. Batlground does some good work and has created some monster drifters so I am anxiously awaiting to see what his car does on the 19th.

IPD, I am sure will help me diagnose things in the future(if there is a need) and I am confident in their ability but a tuner down the street will have a much easier time "fixing" things when they can drive it and physically touch it.
I am greatful that I found P1, which is about an hour away but they were the ONLY place even close to me that would attempt to work on a volvo.
Re: Turbo Upgrade... (R_Rated)

As far as recomendations. I have the GT30R. This is a good size turbo that I had titanium blades put on and ported and polished the day it went on. (this was "fun" from a time standpoint) My R will make respectable numbers on the dyno but spools way faster than the stock K24. This IMO is a great combo for fast 0-60 times as well as great times next time I go to an HPDE day. The GT35R will without a doubt make more power. There is a Tiburon in my club putting 650hp to all four wheels (yes, awd) with a GT35R but takes a bit to spool. So the drawback here is spoolage delay.
If your car never goes to a track day but you just want to be able to clearly "rale" M3's and S4's then get a GT28R which will "only" put your R at 400hp range.
Hardware even though a PITA on these cars is one thing. The other and more important thing is to get the ECU programed accordingly. The reason I went with IPD was because of they had a proven tune for the bigger turbo. When I got the R, Evolve had a kit "around the corner" and it seems as if there are alot of products for the R like this that we are all still waiting for. I did not want to wait another 10 months and still not have a solution. This is just me being impatient. The reason I was so confident with IPD was their history with volvos and them teaming up with TME/MTE and the collective experience gives them more resources than any tuner in the US. Plus they are the only tuner that has a "following" that is consistant and does not have a hanful of pissed of customers. Their customers seem to get hooked and be return cutomers. This means alot to me because I know they will be here in the future when I have questions. Ever since the svenske thing went down and any company could have some skeletons that somehow get out, I like that they will be around. These same considerations should be relivant to a local tuner. I have driven several cars that are in my club and a product of Batlground and can speack for them. They are all very, very , very fast.

Re: Turbo Upgrade... (R_Rated)

What is needed in a turbo upgrade besides the turbo? Keep in mind I know nothing. IS the GT28R a good upgrade? I'm looking (for the future) to do a complete modification including ECU flash, Exhaust, Downpipe. If a bigger modded turbo is selected such as the above, do you have to get a map to go with it?? A specific ECU flash?? if that makes sense... Also, what about installation?? Difficult?? I would think so.. but have no idea. I have a 05' Geartronic
Thanks..
Jeremy

Re: Turbo Upgrade... (Js05S60R)

There are few that have done turbo upgrades on the R. I am NOT one of them. I am taking the easier route and adding nitrous.
To do the turbo upgrade will cost you about $8,000 to $10,000 after you factor in a new FMIC, down pipe, exhaust, turbo, plumbing, ECU (Unless you get a turbo that already has a tune you will have to get one created), etc. In other words not cheap!
If you are serious about doing it, I might recommend getting a down pipe, exhaust and ECU upgrade first. If not enough I am going to have some information soon on a 50 shot of nitrous that should put the R around 325ish (wheel hp).
Just an FYI. It is not a simple plug and play, but if you have the money and time, I say go for it!

Svenke used to offer a lesser upgrade in the form of larger blades (I think) and polished/enlarged insides. I believe it was meant as a staight replacement for the stock. Anyone else offers something like that?

Re: Turbo Upgrade... (Rangeball)

quick question: if a person wanted to upgrade the turbo of their s60 car in the future, wouldn't it be better just get a base s60 2.5t and upgrade the turbo rather than buying an R since you are going to replace the turbo anyways? I know the R has bigger brakes, but if we are just looking at speed performancec, it seems more reasonable to me to just save the money and buy the 2.5t and use the money you saved to upgrade the turbo.

Also the bigger air dam in the front makes a difference. There is not a big enough cost difference between the 2 do a brake upgrade much less everything else.

Go find yourself a pre-owned S60 2.5T AWD.
Pull the motor, bore it out a wee bit, replace all the internals, slap on a fancy turbo, FMIC, R-front bumper cover. Find a junkyard R and buy the 6-speed manual tranny and shifter, and install along with a SPEC 3 clutch. Then I'd run with Heico's downpipe and dual-outlet cat-back exhaust system.
Rip out the shocks/springs and go with a coil-over setup, and get ipd's track-spec sway bars for the R, along with QBM's end links. Put this brake kit on the car, along with some Heico wheels of your choice (HRE thinks their wheels are made of crack, and their pricing reflects their belief). Of course, stainless steel brake lines included.
And if you wanted, you could even take the entire interior out of that junkyard R and put it into the car you're building.
If you did all that, I think you'd have a car that's WAY faster (in a straight line) than most heavily modded R's, and would definitely out-handle an R in the turns. So you'd get everything that's great about the R, with none of it's downfalls (i.e. 4C), in a vehicle that would outperform an R, for about the same price as a new one.
But then you're stuck with a couple year old pre-owned car that's got roughly 20 grand more put into it than what it's worth. To each his own, though.
