I am going to be installing my Alpine head unit in my 850 T-5, and I was thinking that since the stock radio is 2 DIN, and my Alpine is 1 DIN, i would be able to put a turbo timer underneath the head unit to fill some of the space left over. My question is, does anyone here have a turbo timer on thier Volvo's? I kind of understand the basics of how they work, but if someone could explain it further that would be nice too. Thanks
Chris

Re: Turbo Timers (ChrisNylen)

I have heard of some people who have installed these sucessfully, the only problem encountered is bypassing the factory alarm system, which appearntly does not like to arm if the engine is running. I believe they didn't have too much trouble with this, or at least I didn't hear about it.
If you're looking to save money for upgrades, a Turbo timer is not so nessicary with a 15G turbo, as it is water cooled. I find that most of the time, the amount of time I've spent idleling while parking and unloading anyone in the car is enough for cooldown with the turbo. Maybe I'm just cheap

Re: Turbo Timers (ChrisNylen)

They're pretty simple.. I have a Blitz timer with the mini-display, so I don't know about timers that would fill up that extra din for you, but the hookup was easy, one wire spliced into constant voltage, another ignition, and another accessory. To my understanding, how it works is when you turn off the key, the timer basically bypasses the key switch and keeps sending voltage to the ignition for a set time, then allows the car (and itself) to shut down.
Also, if you decide the timer isn't worth it, a popular way of filling that extra din is with auxiliary gauges. (I have a voltmeter there.. it's actually been pretty useful for keeping an eye on the draw from my system)

If you do go with a timer, some people find a good place to mount them is in the ashtray compartment, as many do not use it.
Extra guages are always good http://www.egauges.com offers very good prices on Autometer and VDO guages.
