Hey everyone,

update on recently purchased 2017 xc90 r design.
Car is running beautifully. But there is one thing. There is what I believe a turbo chirp that you can hear at about 2500 rpms up to 3000, and only under a load. Say driving on a slope at a decent speed. It sounds mechanical - not like air. Took the car back to the dealership and the gent there is diagnosing and working on it. Very good guy, second car we’ve bought from him. He switched a part out thinking it was one thing and the sound is still present. So now it’s off to the shop to get diagnosed and fixed. Question: I caught this sound and mentioned it before we bought it and he said that sometimes turbos make that sound, there are no warning lights on and that it was fine. If it needed to be addressed he would look at it. Fine. I drive it home, and then we drove up to the mountain the next week. Sound is there. Loud and unpleasant. Wrote him an email about it and he’s been nothing but helpful and now in full agreement that it needs to be fixed. I think the turbo is covered until 70k miles. I have 50 on it. I have power train warranty and bought an extended warranty as well. When it’s all said and done what’s fair for me to pay for and what’s fair for him? The sound was there, he should have fixed it before selling the car, but I heard it and bought it anyway. Thoughts?
I feel like I should have just told him to fix before I bought it..and here we are.

I had a whining noise on mine.

You can check if it is somewhat like that in this post:

If it sounds like that it is probably the balance shaft.

Good luck!

It is common on these engines for the exhaust manifold nuts and bolts loosen and or the studs on each end to break.
When this happens the engine will make a momentary "chirping" sound on hard acceleration.
The gasket is two layers of thin steel and it flutters like a reed musical instrument
.
If either of the two studs on the ends are broken the cylinder head will have to come off for extraction on the bench.

Hopefully one of your warranties will cover exhaust gaskets, hardware and labor.

We finally got our XC90 back. And Vista88 was right. Exhaust manifold gasket had to be replaced. Volvo even gave the go ahead to replace the turbo and hit the breaks at the last minute. The chirping is now gone and the car is running perfectly. I drove a friends BMW 540i Xdrive for a bit while the 90 was in the shop, and I gotta say the Volvo is so much smoother of a car to drive. The BMW was so much faster though. Hit he gas and you're at 90 mpr with out even trying. We didn't buy the Volvo to drag race - it's fast enough!

There is not. And that’s preferable for me.
I wish it had a bit more power - but I drove up a mountain today and it was fine. No speed racer but it got the job done. 50 more horses would have been nice 😎.
Here’s the thing though. If I wanted that I would have gone for a Porsche. Volvo is a different game and I appreciate it. Relaxed, comfortable, easy, dependable, safe.
We have a v50 and I can whip that around corners no problem. And I do.
Polestar upgrade coming soon.
