You all may remember when I said this:

Something to note, the main intake is essentially level with the airbox, so you are more likely to get snow/water (bee) in through there because there is no gravity to fight, they just have to ride the air current.

Well I was taking some pictures today for CAI kit instructions, and lookee what I discovered (it was raining yesterday), lots of water spray in main intake.

Also worth noting, while there were plenty of water remnants around the inside of the box, the inside of the CAI hose was BONE DRY.

Proves my point that water doesn't come up CAI intake, because there are turns in the line, inside is ribbed for your pleasure, and water has to fight 2 feet of gravity.

It was also raining a lot here and a few minutes ago I looked mine too.No water or moisture.

So where does the water come from in your car?

Autobahn. Stock intakes are all coming from main grill.

I wouldn't be too worried about a little moisture, or even a lot, in the airbox. It would take much more to cause damage, except for maybe long term corrosion.

I can't begin to describe the amount of water I've seen go through recip engines with forward intakes.

And don't even get me started about water through turbines.....

I'm not worried at all, that is why Volvo puts a little drain hole in the lower left corner.

I was just pointing out with pictures to all the people that were concerned about water coming up from CAI, that they needn't be worried.

You'll never suck water up through that hose unless the forward intake gets completely blocked.

Lasr year at waterfest during all that flooding in NJ, there were quite a few hydrolocked VWs which had cold air intakes. They were the ones where the stock airbox is replaced and the filter is moved down low in the fender. Some people saved themselves by removing the intake and clamping the filter on, or by just waiting it out. It really doesn't take much water.

Water on turbines causes pitting which weakens the blades and can result in catastrophic failure. You're right to not want this to happen.

How dry is bone, anyway?

Bones can be found with various levels of lubrication, depends on numerous factors.

Probably why volvo puts an air filter in between air intake and turbo.

THE POINT OF THIS POST WAS TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT IF THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WATER WITH A CAI ROUTING FROM FOG LAMP GRILL, THEY SHOULDN'T BE. THE ONLY WATER MAKING IT INTO AIRBOX WAS MIST FROM THE FREEWAY COMING IN THROUGH STOCK INTAKE.

The air filter does its job and stops this moisture from going any farther, and the drain hole in the air box allows it to drain out. The key is the moisture was NOT coming from CAI hose, but stock intake routing from main grill.

Well, on descent a couple of nights ago you would have thought you were in a 600 mph submarine with the water going over the wind shields, and no I wasn't reading the sports section with the autopilot on.
