Every other function of the cluster works, including the fuel gauge/water temperature/speedometer/clock. I am rather sure I connected the wrong piece to the back of the cluster, as both were operating before I swapped the reset button. If someone has a picture of the back of a cluster with everything plugged in, or can guide me without one, I would be most appreciative
p.s. I am kicking myself because I normally always take a picture of anything I m taking apart, but for some reason I failed to do so this time. Funny how that happens

Re: tripometer and odometer don't work after installing new tripometer ... (1sciroccofahrer)

If I remember correctly, connecting the wires is a matter of a few plugs that don't fit any other way. There is a little plastic gear that operates the odometers. It gets hard and brittle as it ages. When I took mine out it was in pieces and crumbs. I got a new one from ipd that is an improved design. My trip odometer still doesn't work as the "button" falls out but the new gear fixed the odometer.

Re: tripometer and odometer don't work after installing new tripometer ... (ncvolvobob)

I took the cluster out again this afternoon, and I honestly didn't know exactly where to look for the plastic gear-and how to get it out when you do get to it. I did look around the odometer and tripometer numbers, and I couldn't see anything that was broken. I was having trouble ascertaining where the white/red wire(female) connected to the male part inbetween the speedometer and the fuel/water gauges-the two male connectors that have that yellow piece around them. I connected it both to the top and bottom, and still no success. I know that it is feasible that the gear broke sometime between yesterday when I drove it last, and this morning when I installed the "new" reset button, but I think something else could be at play. I am going to head back to the dismantler tomorrow, and see what's what. Have a splendid Saturday evening one and all

So I found the (white) plastic gear, and it is in a splendid state. There must be something else going on.....is it safe to assume that there is a little motor that drives the gear? Looks like more fun awaits me tomorrow

Re: tripometer and odometer don't work after installing new tripometer ... (1sciroccofahrer)

I just came back from the dismantler, and "discovered" that there is an extra wire behind the cluster that doesn't connect to anything. Now I need to find the proper orange/yellow wire which connects between the speedometer and fuel/water temp gauges. I will report back later

Re: tripometer and odometer don't work after installing new tripometer ... (1sciroccofahrer)

I reconnected everything and I am still without an odometer. I checked the teeth of the gear, and they were all there and in good shape. I also manually put three more miles on odometer, so I am thinking that there must be some electrical problem. Once I am done pruning trees, I will have another go at it. At least, I am now quite comfortable with the removal and installation of the cluster assembly

the red and white striped wire is from the ignition coil. the yellow and red wire goes in the lower left for the shift light the other three wires only go on where they are supposed to. it does sound like you have an electrical problem in there. hope you get it all worked out!

Re: tripometer and odometer don't work after installing new tripometer ... (Camyman)

Thanks Camyman! I am pleased to know that I am not a complete dolt when it comes to putting things back together I am going to have my mechanic look at the the cable to the front (right?) wheel to make sure that it is connected. Hopefully it is something that simple. I will keep the board up to date as I am able to glean more information. Have a splendid evening

Scirocco, is your speedo electric or cable driven? I know that the early 80's 240s are cable but dont know too much about the clusters in them from 86 up.

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

I believe - though I could be wrong, as I so often am - that the speedo is electric driven in the '92 240. If anyone would like to chime in and either confirm or deny my assertion, it would be most appreciated Luckily the speedo works, as well as all the gauges, and I am confident that I put all the wires in the right place(thanks Camyman ). Hopefully I will have something positive to report after I return home from training this morning. Cheers one and all

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

86 up are electrical, before that was cable driven. Both have their pickup at the rear differential. I am assuming your's is electrical because of your concern with getting the wires right. The speedo/odo use one connector (the three wire right angled connector). You should be able to get the speedo and odo to work with nothing but this plugged in. You can fry the speedo head if you connect the red/white (tach) wire to the terminal that is supposed to used for the cruise control speed pickup.

Re: (rs4-380)

Thanks rs4-380 Was I wrong in assuming that the odomter cable goes to the front right wheel? I know that this is a little off topic, but will any harm be done by removing the light bulb that "instructs" you when to upshift? I removed it from my Scirocco, if only because it was annoying, and shifting at 2000 rpm-and why is it that the '92 has a big clock but no rpm gauge-is for automatic drivers

Re: (1sciroccofahrer)

actually, if you have a '92, I am pretty unfamilar with the late cars. The presence of ABS changes alot of things, and I would imagine it does use wheel speed sensors for vehicle speed, of which the front wheels are a more accurate choice.
yes you can remove/tape over the upshift bulb.

Scirocco,
Back in 96 my son got ahold of the reset button on the 81 245 and he busted it out. What I did was just put a dab of superglue on the end of the part that broke and put it back into the cluster. It worked ok. Then I couldnt afford to get a new cluster. Could you have done that with yours?

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

The reset button was indeed broken, and I just figured it would be easiest to pull a few from the junk yard, and install the best one. Before I installed it, both the odometer and trip odometer were working just splendidly. When it stops raining here in California, I will pull the cluster again and have another go at it
p.s. Do I really need to disconnect the (-) battery cable each time I pull the cluster? It is really getting to be a pain with the frequency I am pulling the cluster.

Scirocco,
When I worked on my 242, 245s cluster, I never disconnected the bat. Specialy for taking out the cluster. Just keep the key out of the ign. You will not short anything on the back of the cluster. No worries. Especialy after you pull off the connectors. ( how ever, disconnecting the batt= better safe than sorry.
I did install the GT package insterment cluster in my 242 as it was an option in 79 and 80. I hooked up the parking brake wire backwards ( I think ) and fried the wires from the cluster all the way to the brake handle. ( the brown and black wire on that year) I had to replace the whole harness under the dash. That sucked.

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

Low and behold, the odometer(and trip odometer)are working again-kind of. My brother drove the Volvo around today(while his VW was in the shop), and for the last 8/10 of a mile until he got to the house, the odometer and trip odometer worked. I reset the trip odometer, and he called me from the road to say that the trip odometer wouldn't go past 9/10 of a mile. I had him reset it once again, and he will ring me a little later to inform me of his progress. I will keep the board updated

Re: (1sciroccofahrer)

Apparently now the odometer and trip odometer aren't working at all after my brother reset the trip odometer. I can now be rather certain that it is indeed an electrical problem. The fun continues
