Well, I was hoping to brag about some great MPG numbers, but I should have known better
I had my buddy and girlfriend in the car with our luggage, so an extra few-hundred pounds more than I am used to. On the way down, we had the A/C on, but off on the way home. It was about 85% highway, 15% stop and go.
360 miles roundtrip, 60 miles remaining on the trip meter, which means 23.3 MPG average.
In 2 weeks I am heading to the OBX with my buddy and I am hoping to see much improved results since we are leaving in the evening and will not use A/C and it should be much smoother driving conditions.
It sucks when you spend $60 to fill the tank, and 2 days later its empty!

Re: Trip to OCMD...gas mileage (phuz)

I wouldn't say that your mileage was all that bad. What were you expecting to see? I would have thought that 25 would be tops.
Sucky is having a job that requires you to drive 76 miles each way to and from work, with some driving around during the day while you are there. Try filling a tank $40-$50 a shot 4-5 times per week on average!
That got old quick, but we were moving. The gas bill for the last 6 weeks before moving: $1750!

Last time I made the trip from Silver Spring, MD to Salisbury University and back I got just a little over 30 mpg on my V70R 6 speed manual!
Doug H

Your average is reasonable; especially with only 2-3K on the odometer. I recently averaged 24.6 on a mostly highway trip (75mph with the A/C) which IMO, is about right considering its rated at 18/25.

does anyone know how many miles (or hours) the computer takes into consideration for its average calculation?
in other words, how many miles or hours would i have to drive at 25 mpg before my MPG average would actually say 25mpg.

Then again, I have never reset mine and after 15K miles, it shows 21.x which is about right. I calculated the trip average without the computer.

I believe the computer calculates your MPG by averaging your last 12 miles. The "---" is when you have less than 30 miles in your tank.
SATX<---thats my city

Depending on you average speed, it may be more economical to leave the a/c on considering the amount of drag caused by having the windows open. I believe it's above 55 or 65 mph, it is said that having the windows down will hurt, not help gas mileage.

Re: Trip to OCMD...gas mileage (Vipergtsz3)

My wife must have a lead foot. I looked at hers yesterday and the avg is 18.5 mpg. Of course that was before the fuel pressure sensor and fuel pump where replaced so that may have been contributing to the bad gas mileage.

Re: Trip to OCMD...gas mileage (minorthr)

I know some people have said that the computer is fairly accurate, but the only way to know your true mileage is to record the amount of gallons it takes to fill up and doing the calculations manually.
Even that is something of a stretch for one trip considering different pumps click off at different points, etc. Better to do it over a couple of tanks.
But if you really want to know how you did on a particular trip, head to the gas station and fill up when you get back.

Re: Trip to OCMD...gas mileage (needsdecaf)

On a recent trip on the interstate going 65 to 75 mph with the AC on, I averaged 32.6 MPG, according to the computer. I normally get 25.5 MPG in combined driving. I've calculated it myself a couple of times and usually get 1 MPG less than the computer.

you are all very lucky for th enumbers you are averaging. Since I bought my car two months ago I have put 5000 miles on it and my average mpg for those 5000 miles is 16.4. That is with a good amount of highway driving.
