Hi all,
Time for a new dumb question from me. Does anyone know how to remove the trim (fins) without causing too much damage on them?
I am moving along on my restoration and it is getting time to have it painted and i would prefer to remove the trim instead of a quickjob and masking them.

Re: Trims (Mats)

Mats:
You didn't say what year.
The early ones are held on by screws. A metal piece slides into the chrome trim (this is also true for the side trim) and has a screw in the middle. That goes through a hole in the body and a washer, lock washer and nut are on the other side. I think there are five on each fin. You have to get the front one from inside the car, the quarter panel upholstery has to be removed. One of them is up under by the rear window in the trunk. They are not easy to get to and are probably rusted and may break the screw. Just take it easy and if any brake you can make your own, just drill a hole in a peice of metal and solder the screw in place.
If you have a later car only one spot has a screw on the fin and thats by the tail light. They used spring clips on all the rest, side and fin chrome.
The early ones are brass and can be rechromed if not damaged. The later ones are stainless steel and can be polished up.

A quater inch drive ratchet, extension and correct size long socket works great. You can get it in the small spaces, have enough hand movement to trun it and still get the nuts on and off easily.

I have a 64 that is in process and I have the same question about the trim. How many screws are there? Access?

Re: Trims (gdill2)

Thanks a bunch fo the link. That's so much better than the green books on scanned on discs that I have so far. Even some of the (to remain nameless) parts dealer on the web use the scaned books. The CVI site is a blessing. Thanks again
