Just looking for a place to start...
I'm driving from Virginia Beach to Cleveland and the orange up-arrow light in the dash and the light on the transmission mode switch start to flash. Like a jackass I keep driving and two days later, transmission is gone (I think). The fluid level is good but I havn't replaced the filter yet. If the car sits for 15 minutes or so it will move about 200 yards and then start slipping. Like I said, I havn't looked into it yet, just parked the thing for now, time to get the ol' 240 running...

Re: Transmission trouble (2404life)

If you need a new trans, check out the fellas at erievovo.com. They are one of the best places to get replacement parts from professionally salvaged cars.
I've bought a bunch of stuff from them...and they're a good group to deal with.
Good luck and cheers!
Prospero

Re: Transmission trouble (2404life)

You said the fluid level is ok but what about the fluid itself, is it red or brown and smelling burnt, may need a flush, as for changing the filter they don't have one unless an aftermarket inline one like a Magnafilter has been fitted. You say it "slips" or is it just in 3rd gear which is the "limp home mode", the "PNP" switches are are a weak link they can be rebuilt or new ones in the US are very cheap (lucky you) even the genuine Volvo one and generic ones like Scan Tech are even cheaper if you shop around.
What mileage are we looking at.

Its got about 130k on it. Its definately not in limp mode, it will start in first gear and shift to second and thats it. I can move it about 50 feet when I want to pull it into the garage and really no further because it starts to slip. The fluid is definately burnt, that can't be good. I found a car with a manual tranny, its a 93 with 130k on it but I need to have it shipped from boston to cleveland. As far as a good manual tranny, I have read all of the posts about the M56H and the M56L. It doesnt seem to me that one is far better than the other. The guy said that this is the second tranny he had in the car because the second gear sincro in the other one went out. It is from another car but I don't know how many miles are on it. I figure a rebuild shouldn't be that bad on that tranny though, any thoughts?

I would flush your tranny and check or replace the PIP switch first.
That MAY save your transmission.
Today in the morning my car's Up Arrow light was flashing too. The car wouldnt even start at first but, after 5 minutes it started with the Arrow light flashing. Drove it to the gas station and filled it up, after the fillup the light turned off, the same thing happened after i cleaned my throttle body.
