Hey guys,
My transmission has been on the rocks for just over a year - making a sputtering-like noise when not accelerating, clutch is engaged and in gears 1 and 2. The noise has just recently turned into metal on metal noise in the lower gears (can feel it through the clutch), and a sputtering like noise has moved all the way into 4th gear. Also, shifting in the lower gears has become a bit "stickier" and makes a rip-cord noise from 1 to 2.
Do you guys see an easy fix for this one?
What gearbox is in my car right now? M56H? I'm preparing for the worst, and whenever I do I try and add a silver lining by upgrading the things on my car that fail... so I was thinking of heading to a FWD M66.
My questions are around what other parts would need to be swapped when making the upgrade - flywheel, gear linkage, slave cylinder etc? Since my car is a P2, will any of this have to change? I've started my research but would like to hear your feedback.
Or should I just grab another M56H?

Re: Transmission is near death - M66 an option? (GuelphVolvo)

How many miles?
This is rare for one of these to disintegrate.
Maybe it's something else, but to not have someone look at it and you just guessing, is not the brightest of ideas!

pretty sure your car doesn't have an m56H, but rather an L. The ratios are a tad different, but thats it.
There should be a white paper sticker on the top of your trans, and towards the firewall, should be able to see it with the hood popped open.
An m66 should be a near direct swap, and a nice one at that, but sometimes when i drive 6sp cars i get tired of shifting... something to think about

And then some electronic gizmo is needed to activate the valve when the car is moving forward over a certain speed to lock the reverse slot else you might go reverse when selecting 6th gear.
The M56 shifter doesn't have the bracket which runs against the reverse lock valve nor does it have the valve.

Hey Johann
That is a nice informative reply. Thanks.
How different are the overall ratios between the boxes, the 5 and 6 speed ones.
Also for the 5 speed boxes, the H & L boxes, which were typically to which vehicles?

Re: (wynsam)

3rd and 4th gear are shorter. I believe in some versions the 6th gear is longer. Be aware that there are diesel 6 speeds which do not have very nice ratio's for a gasoline engine.
The T5 came with M56LK. Difference between the M56's are the first 2 gears and sometimes the final drive ratio.

Don't worry JRL, it's going into the shop shortly for a proper diagnosis by a Volvo Master Tech with many years under his belt.
My car is at 149,000KM. So still a youngin' in terms of experience on the road.

Thanks so much for the info Johann. I'm glad that it won't be too much of a stretch to get the swap to work if I choose to go that route. I will hunt down the electronic gizmo, because the last thing I would want is to throw it into R when driving.
Just got back from my mechanic and it looks like the transmission is on its last legs.
I took a look and the sticker on my transmission, as Johann said, is the M56LK.
The question is, what is the best way to find the an M56LK or M66W (6-Speed Manual S60 T5 FWD, S40/V50 T5 FWD)? Is there a reputable supplier of new ones on our boards? What price range am I looking at for new ones vs used ones (granted if I can find either used, both are probably hard to come by).
Any help would go a long way at this point.
I looked up the part number for a 2005 M66 FWD from a S60 T5
Part number:8603352
If you go through myswedishparts.com the tranny is 2,169.94... I think it is an exchange program?

You could take that part number to your local dealer and they could get you one (if your a VCOA member you can save 5% off your purchase)
for a used tranny try Car-part.com, I was only able to find a M66 from an R however for $1400
Chris

Thanks CJones! That info will help me track one down. I think I've located one up in Quebec.
My tranny is leaking a lot of fluid now and is popping out of gear anywhere north of 4K RPM. I'm also finding the power steering to be wonky - are the two related somehow?
What's up with these transmissions? Even before I destroyed mine and caused the leak, I drained and replaced the fluid and it came out all black...

So I was able to find an M66W with 50,000KM up at Northstar Auto Recyclers in Laval, Quebec. I should have it in hand in the next couple of days.
I wasn't able to find shifter cables (apparently going through the hassle of getting them out doesn't pay off for a scrap yard) or a shifter, so I bit the bullet and went through my dealer. I picked up the shifter cables, the interior shifter panel, and the reverse solenoid from a 2004 R and hopefully these will work. The dealership seems to think I don't need a new shifter... and the "lock out nut" and solenoid is all I need.
Hopefully they are right, and if they are wrong that it isn't too hard to put in a shifter after the fact (correct me if I'm wrong).

1100CDN for the M66W. I couldn't find a M56LK in Canada. The ones I found in the states were comparable in price (but more since USD, and shipping cost more, and then getting it across the border etc).
I do like shifting a lot. I "air shift" when I walk because I love it so much.

Alright, so far so good. Ran into some rear mount issues, but have ordered a P2 M66 rear mount and hopefully that will fit as the one from the S40 definitely doesn't.
My next big issue is clutch - which one will work with the flywheel I have in my vehicle and the transmission?
