I had my 90K service at the dealer and was told that my transmission fluid was very dark needed to be flushed.
My boyfriend researched this online and read that only Mobil ATF 3309 transmission fluid should be used and that the Normal Dexron III / Mercon fluid will lead to transmission failure.
However, I called an independant mechanic I usually use and he said that the info on his computer says to use Dexron III / Mercon fluid.
What transmission fluid is to be used for a 1998 Volvo S70 GLT and how much should this cost?
Many thanks,
Allison
Your indy mechanic is right. '98's used the DestronIII/Mercron, or if you're like me you can switch over to Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF, NOT MOBIL-3309. 3309 is only for 5 speed automatics found in 2000 and newer Volvo's.

Re: Transmission Fluid for Volvo 1998 S70 GLT (allisonw)

Hey, a volvo neighbor!! If you ever see a navy blue S70 with an IPD flag on the back, wave or something...
But regarding your question.. everything I've heard backs up the advice given by the previous two posters -- both of them
