02 V70 2.4T

About 75% of the time, when going from any gear, to drive, it lurches into gear very hard. You can feel a slight bump, and then a pause, then quite a hard hurch as it goes in. This isn't the neutral/stop shift, that has been programmed out as far as I can tell, its never done it since we had it. Dealer has done a reflash, flush, and readaption, its no better. Software update did make it shift through the gears nicer, but thats it. Now the response is, "its normal". There is no way its normal, hitting as hard as it does, esp when it doesn't do it all the time. From the searching I have done, this looks like a valve body issue? All other shifts are fine, up and down, just when changing from P,R,or N to drive it does this. Allthough sometimes if cold outside, it does hang in first a bit, gotta let off , then its fine. Any ideas??

Re: Trans issue?? (BellevilleV70)

Since you have done all the necessary stuff it sure sounds like a valve body to me.
Hope you're still under warranty

Yeah still under warr., just can't get them to fix it, or admit a problem. I take it its a big job $ wise. Maybe thats why they are playing stupid.

No, it's not. About 2 hours, tops, (plus the Valve body, of course).
You don't remove the trans, it goes in from the side

I am having the same problem. Valve body - $1600-1800. I talked with another mechanic who is familiar with this problem in Volvos and he thinks that Volvo might be reimburing customers. It is worth it to push the dealer to pay for it to be replaced - there are a lot of problems with this part. I'll let you know what happens with mine.

Re: (simone207)

Does yours also have this problem when you are braking? Feels like a lurching or a pocket of air. I bought an aftermarket extended warranty (don't ever do that - buy the Volvo extended warranty instead!) and they will pay for the work once the mechanic takes the trans pan off to see if there are metal shavings which would be indicative of needing a new trans. They will charge me $300 to do the diagnosis. My other mechanic says they will have to take this off to replace the valve body anyhow so there should only be an additional charge if the valve body doesn't need replacing but rather the entire transmission.

That's nuts.
I will find out the exact price of the Valve body later today but I know that's not even close.
I know it's only a couple of hour deal to replace

Re: (BellevilleV70)

This may not fix the banging into drive but all of you with tranny problems and especially shift flares, etc.
Look at and/or replace the piston servo
PN 30751262 This is a 12.00 part and takes 5 minutes to replace. (side of transmission)
A KNOWN problem with AsianWarner transmissions. They have already gone through 3 different designs of this part.
My service manager said he can't believe how many were fixed using this very cheap fix

Re: Trans issue?? (BellevilleV70)

Well FINALLY got it fixed. Selling dealer wouldn't do anything, said it was "normal"...........took it to a differnt dealer, took them a MONTH, yes they had the car a MONTH, but finally put a brand new trans in, replaced a door latch that was bad, and seatbelt that kept hanging up. Hope this ends the problems for awhile. Can't even feel it go into gear now, so much for smashing into gear being "normal"

Im glad you were ale to get your tranny issue fixed. My tranny had the same problem and volvo would not fix it right after 5 trips to one dealer and one to a second dealer.I also had the flashes and reprograming of the computer.I finally did my own tranny flush with mobil one full synthetic fluid and the car shifts so much better.

Re: Trans issue?? (Robe)

Robe,
If you have an '01 auto 5 speed and used Mobil-1 full synthetic and not Mobil-3309 (same as the Mobil 3309 ATF) then you used the wrong stuff. It may be smooth now but I worry for your transmission. You can look over on matthewsvolvosite.com and see the posts by a guy who used the wrong stuff and what it did to his car.

Dave, Dave, Dave,
What am I going to do with you?
Volvo "synthetic" ATF is 3309, now rebottled.
It's not real syn but the dealers are calling it synthetic. It's actually a mineral based fluid. I got into this last week and called Mobil and have the printout of its properties.
All GOOD dealers are now using this

Jim,
I read his profile and it said he owned an '01. Read above...he used Mobil one. That's Mobil-1 to me and not the Mobil "synthetic" 3309 that you mentioned. I'm on the same page with you on using the correct fluid. Just concerned that Robe did not. I edited my earlier post because I meant to say Mobil-1 and I said Volvo Synthetic instead. I hope you get where I'm going with this.
