Yes there's a dipstick, it's on the front of the car very close to the starter. Here is a pic on a transmission removed from an '04 C70:

And here is the only angle that you can see it through without removing any hoses. If you take off the lower intercooler hose you can get to it. (dead center of the picture, a half moon between the hoses).

Ya the only way I knew it was there was when I had the radiator out. It's literally impossible to see when the car is all put together, except for that one angle. Crazy.

Re: (LloydDobler)

When they shoe-horned the 5 speed auto in there in 2001, the dip stick got buried. The owners manual was revised to simply remove any reference to a trans dipstick.
Fluid changing becomes an act of measuring what you take out and what you put back in. Well and good if the level is right to begin with.
Good thing the fluid is synthetic and only needs to be changed at 60K or so.

Re: (LloydDobler)

So you discovered that the only way to check the fluid level in your 5 sp auto trans was to remove it?

Re: (LloydDobler)

So the question remaining is: how do you check fluid level in the 5 sp auto? Typically auto trans fluid level is checked at operating temperature, with the engine running. If you have to remove hoses to get at the dipstick on this one, obviously the engine canot be running.
Anyone have ideas? Does this design get checked with the engine off?

I think you can reach it if you remove the intake pipe that just runs from above the radiator to the air box. You just can't see it. Hehe.

Quote, originally posted by flat_six »

So you discovered that the only way to check the fluid level in your 5 sp auto trans was to remove it?

Actually, I decided to change the fluid, but all they had was manual transmission fluid, so I had to get a manual transmission too. I mean, come on! You can't put manual fluid in an automatic transmission!

Heh, I'll sell you the tranny in the pictures above, if we can confirm it's the same one you need. It's from an '04 C70, it has 47k on it, and I personally drove it for 8000 miles in the year prior to pulling it. It was working perfectly when I swapped it for a manual last november. I'll probably have to ship it on a pallet which will make it around $250 to ship (ballpark guess).
If Chilled Man or Erie Vovo has one they're a lot closer, but this one has low miles and known history. PM me if you're interested.

Re: (LloydDobler)

Hey all, here's a link to an archived thread from a few years ago where I describe my issues with my transmission:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=69026
By the way, I was told that the transmission replacements were expensive because there were somewhere near 10 different transmissions used during the 97 - 05 years and as a result there are very few specific transmissions available to be rebuilt on the cheap.
