Mobil makes it for Volvo, for Toyota, for Ford, etc
As long as it's 3309 compliant you're OK.
The cheapest will be Toyota Type IV

16 is best but 12 is Ok

thanks, i just read and found that huge long thread with BlackTTT and you and fredmc. lol

i would have to agree with you guys.

JWS 3309 is non-synthetic, and AW and Volvo approve for the car. correct?

Since this thread is here...

Anyone know about for a manual tranny? Same fluid, but I think I saw it only takes a quart?

Thanks!

Re: (StarmanDXE)

Manual transmissions use a true "synthetic" from Volvo. I don't know a sub for it. It's not JWS 3309. But if it's just one quart like you say, just get it from the dealer.

Yeah, BlackTT was a trip, absolutely convinced the Volvo fluid is special and synthetic. What a crock. Plus he blew his trans out anyway. A real head case.

I just picked up 4 quarts of Toyota T-IV fluid at a dealers. It was $5.22 per quart. Just doing a drain and fill as I have always done every year.

Come to think of it, what would happen if you did that? Wouldn't fluid just start gushing out? I like the idea of removing the top hose, but then (as it said) you don't get the fluid out of the radiator's end tank... :-/

I dunno. Good luck! (I hope someone else will have a say on this matter

thats why i wanted to do drain and fill but nobody is telling me where to drain from! lol

either way, if i did the top hose drain, and filled and repeated i would eventually get most of it changed.

So, inlet is on the top of the radiator's side tank, outlet is on the bottom? (i.e. If you disconnect the top hose, the transmission's pump will push the fluid out of that hose, not out of the radiator tank?)

If so, I guess you could put the new fluids into the radiator tank and flush that stuff that way???

Re: (DGBibo)

Just drain and fill a few times. Just like changing engine oil.

Get underneath and locate a hex headed bolt off the trans bottom. It has a washer on it as well.

You will get about 3 to 3.5 quarts coming out. Plug it up, run around the block rinse and repeat three times and your fluid will be much cleaner.

I prefer this method as gravity drains out the fluid and is not as messy.

Apply the parking brake, gear selector in park, start the engine and allow the engine to idle. Switch the engine off when 2 quarts of oil have been pumped out or when air bubbles become visible in the hose. Top up with 2 quarts of oil. repeat this procedure 7 times. Check the color of the oil, when the color of the oil is clear red (as new oil), switch off the engine and connect the return hose to the control system (valve body) cover. Check and adjust the oil level.

Volvospeed link says they just take off the top connector on the radiator. I suspect that should work fine (as the oil will drain from the radiator into the transmission) and it probably what I would do out of laziness (and for simplicity). I might pour the new oil (or at least some) into the radiator cooling tank, though...

Re: (DGBibo)

DGBibo,

this is addressed to you. IF you decide to do a simple drain and fill you would simply:

Get car on ramps

Pull the small yellow trans dipstick after raising the hood, search for it, it is there front part of engine between rad and engine passenger side

get under car and take off the hex nut for the trans fluid on the transaxle

drain out, 3.5 quarts will come out in about three to five minutes

Plug it back up with a new crush washer

Get an extended tube for filling the trans pan (available from IPDUSA.com)

Put back what you took out

put dipstick back in

start car

Run it through R, D, 3,2,1 and back

back it out

run around block

and repeat.

use Mobil 3309 only or Toyota T-IV

Do three times

Do again 50K later

All is good
