Had to swerve to miss a deer, somehow managed to drive into a curb which I think blew my tire and possibly smashed the rim. Wasn't able to recover, jumped a bigger curb and slammed into a tree on the right front fender. Thank god I didn't hit the tree head on (sort of side-swiped it on the right). Right front headlight gone, right front fender gone, right front rim split in half. Rim shoved up into the wheel well displacing the glove box a bit. Very noticable bulge in the floor. All other rims/tires destroyed as well.
Front suspension/brakes gone. Rear wheels/shocks are pretty bad too. I think the frame might have buckled. There are a couple of dents in the roof above the right passanger door but nothing impacted there.
Had two friends in the car. No one was hurt. We all walked away with sore backs. Airbags did not deploy, and after looking at damage and nature of impact they really didn't need to. WHIPS did it's job and the seatbelts kept us locked in place. Despite the fact I had at least one blown tire after the initial impact I could feel the car fighting hard to correct the spin and keep us from rolling over. Without a usuable front tire (and a rim that was probably split in half with no usable brake on that wheel) I'm really not suprised I couldn't recover. With over 10 years of very safe driving experience and no accidents I've never been in such a scary situation.
The Volvo fought hard for us and all I really care about is that none of my friends were injured, especially the one in the passanger seat. That tree could have easily penetrated the passanger cabin and messed him up bad.
No damage to engine or engine bay. Car started right up after impact (might have even still been running; can't remember) and I actually tried to back out of the ditch and felt the rear wheels spinning but that was before I realized both front tires were completely destroyed.
No pics yet. Car is at the collision repair shop being assessed. Not sure if it's repairable yet. I'll know in a few days. It sucks but I'm not mad about the car being smashed. Accidents happen and no one was hurt. Insurance is covering it and the car can be replaced or repaired.
I'm sad the Volvo had to serve it's purpose this early in it's life but despite what happened I'm here to tell the story. Whatever problems you might encounter with your R rest assured that if/when the time comes, it will pull through for you.
