Had to swerve to miss a deer, somehow managed to drive into a curb which I think blew my tire and possibly smashed the rim. Wasn't able to recover, jumped a bigger curb and slammed into a tree on the right front fender. Thank god I didn't hit the tree head on (sort of side-swiped it on the right). Right front headlight gone, right front fender gone, right front rim split in half. Rim shoved up into the wheel well displacing the glove box a bit. Very noticable bulge in the floor. All other rims/tires destroyed as well.
Front suspension/brakes gone. Rear wheels/shocks are pretty bad too. I think the frame might have buckled. There are a couple of dents in the roof above the right passanger door but nothing impacted there.
Had two friends in the car. No one was hurt. We all walked away with sore backs. Airbags did not deploy, and after looking at damage and nature of impact they really didn't need to. WHIPS did it's job and the seatbelts kept us locked in place. Despite the fact I had at least one blown tire after the initial impact I could feel the car fighting hard to correct the spin and keep us from rolling over. Without a usuable front tire (and a rim that was probably split in half with no usable brake on that wheel) I'm really not suprised I couldn't recover. With over 10 years of very safe driving experience and no accidents I've never been in such a scary situation.
The Volvo fought hard for us and all I really care about is that none of my friends were injured, especially the one in the passanger seat. That tree could have easily penetrated the passanger cabin and messed him up bad.
No damage to engine or engine bay. Car started right up after impact (might have even still been running; can't remember) and I actually tried to back out of the ditch and felt the rear wheels spinning but that was before I realized both front tires were completely destroyed.
No pics yet. Car is at the collision repair shop being assessed. Not sure if it's repairable yet. I'll know in a few days. It sucks but I'm not mad about the car being smashed. Accidents happen and no one was hurt. Insurance is covering it and the car can be replaced or repaired.
I'm sad the Volvo had to serve it's purpose this early in it's life but despite what happened I'm here to tell the story. Whatever problems you might encounter with your R rest assured that if/when the time comes, it will pull through for you.

Sorry to hear of your fortune.
A 94 will be easily totalled with that kind of damage, (heck, so would a 2000)

Re: Tragedy has struck (JRL)

Yep, but this happened in the new R. If the frame isn't bent than it can most likely be repaired. Glad I held onto the 850 though. It's nice to still be able to drive a Volvo after just crashing one.

Re: Tragedy has struck (DocG)

Not yet. It happened late at night and I didn't have a camera on me. I'll try and snag some next time I go to the shop. Or maybe the insurance adjuster will give me copies.

I got the impression he was referring to the '06 V70R by his reference to its early demise.
I either case a car is a car; friends and family are what's important and as you said the Volvo did its job.

Tough break for sure. And if the loss of the car, and your physical injuries weren't enough, you're going to have an at-fault accident on your insurance record, and you'll have to pay your collision deductible, rather than your comprehensive deductible.
It's instinctive for us to try and avoid accidents, but a lot of times it bites us in the backside. I've actually heard police officers tell people that they would have been better off hitting the animal/other vehicle. Years ago, I had a friend that swerved to avoid an animal, ended up hitting another car. He was issued several tickets. The officer told him he should have hit the animal.

Glad to here you are ok. I missed a Moose last winter by about 10 cm comming around a curve in the dark - he was standing right on the highway shoulder.
Always a little scary when the animal weighs as much as your car .
I went and got a set of Osram bulbs after that one.

Re: Tragedy has struck (Mk1Racer)

Collision deductable is only $500. The officers at the scene said I was better off trying to avoid it. There wasn't any traffic up there and I would have hit it head on which would have been really bad. Also, the street wasn't well lit where this happened so the cop didn't indicate an at fault accident on the report. She also said it was deer season up there or something and that deer are everywhere right now. She wasn't at all suprised. Every situation is different I guess.
Thanks for your response.

Anytime this happens sort of thing happens people, unless you're talking with PETA, you at the least struck a glancing blow to the beast.
In my case, I told them the truth, no freaking idea what happened or whether I hit the beast, he looked at the car and found my evolve grille was bent in such a way as to suggest animal impact (it was all bent in without any other damage to the bumper)
What is this? #3 or #4 for this message board for the last 6 months? The curse continues.

Re: Tragedy has struck (mlieras)

I was kind of afraid to read this one when I opened it. I was glad to see nobody was seriously hurt or killed.
Not so much a tragedy. Cars can be replaced.

Re: Tragedy has struck (sniz)

Yeah, we'll see. It'll be a few more days before the insurance adjuster can look at it. I'd really love to get another R, same color. It's a great car. Maybe I'll do overseas delivery for MY07 if I can't find a new '06 v70 sonic.
