I have a 2004 R that I'm pretty happy with. I had planned on keeping it for 4 years (I'll have had it for 3 this summer) and then getting another one. Seeing as how this is likely the last model year, I've been kicking around the idea of trading it in and getting a 2006.

I can get Ford A-plan pricing (invoice pricing) and there is currently a $4k incentive. With the trade-in (46k miles; no $$$s owed), it looks like my out-the-door price will be about $15k (i.e., money out of my pocket).

I really do like the S60R, and really am not aware of any other Ford family vehicle (need to keep the better half happy) coming down the pipeline that I'd rather have, so I'm not worried that something better will come along that I wish I had waited for.

I'm interested in any thoughts you have about the value (given the numbers above) of getting a 2006 or whether I should just keep driving my 2004. Thanks.

IMO, not enough difference to warrant a $15K outlay unless you absolutely must have a new color. As we know, R's are fickle and if you're happy with the 2004, buy an extended warranty and save the cash.

It would also depend on how many miles are on yours

I would say get the new car. I had the same decision as you (buy out the lease for $27K, or get a new car for $40K) and chose the new car.

Well, $15K also includes warranty. Peace of mind is definitely worth something, since he is already almost out of warranty.

If he is looking for a GT, DEFINITELY worth doing. Otherwise-

Insta-trac Haldex for better launches
body color side/lower body moldings
6 disc CD changer
Pro-Logic II
Satellite radio? (don't know if availabe on '04)
Improved center console
ECU that operates twice as fast

Didn't they also improve the 4C system in 2005? I seem to remember something about extra sensors or computers or something.

Yea, different processor, but if your car (04) has all the latest stuff and is working properly, you really can't tell the difference

I am in the same situation, '04 V70 that I really like. I have 68,000 miles with a 100,000 extended warranty (which has paid for itself more than two times over). I have had my spies trying to find when the next R wagon will be available, but no luck. I will be out of warranty by next spring and I don't think the new R will out until fall of '08 or '09 (just a guess). oclv

I had the same thought exactly..but I only have 17,400 on my 2004, like the all black on the dash, and heard the stereo is a littel better in teh 2004's. I'll be keeping mine till the 2010 come out...lol. In the end they are all pretty much the same xept for littel more direct slip control. I'll suffer...

Re: Trading in a 2004 for a 2006 (Dr_Perhaps)

I am in a similar boat with an 04, but mine was the end of the build year, so I will make the decision in May 07. I'd look hard at all the new features of the new S80 just announced. The back seat in the S60R has turned out to be just too small for us when we take passengers, as I am 6'3" and have the drivers seat pretty far back. So IF the new S80 has a larger back leg room area than the 60 or BMW 5-series, its looks pretty neat with the V-8, six speed, full 3-way 4C and AWD...

As much as I love the R, if the new S80 is not any larger, in the back, I may have to look at a 7-series BMW...

No way, $15k for very minor differences plus a warranty...I just couldn't do it (and as you will see from my signature I have a bad habit of upgrading with Volvo.) A buddy of mine recently picked up a '97 Porsche Boxster with 30k miles (garaged Summer car only) for $17k. I haven't checked typical prices but if I were in your shoes I would opt for a used sports car (with moderate miles) of some sort and keep the '04R. (Unfortunately for my friend he rolled his Boxster less than two weeks after he bought it and totalled it - but he's OK.)

C'mon JRL....you should know that 6 speed doesn't necessarily mean manual tranny anymore.

I'd say it's extremely likely that they'll use the 6-speed that's coupled with the XC90 V8.

Actually, yes it does.
In the automotive business when someone referres to a 6 speed they mean manual ALL THE TIME.
On ALL auction sheets they state either 4 sp. 5 sp. 6 sp, then AUTO, and sometimes 5GT or 6GT but 6 sp. means 6 speed (manual) nothing else, EVER
(You should know that).
If someone says 6 speed NO ONE thinks about a 6 speed automatic (except some of the yahoos here who think that's somethng special
(along with all the other 6 speed and 7 speed auto that are out there now)

I agree with JRL that a 6 speed manual will probably not be offered on the S80. Would be nice though.
Wasn't one available on some of the European model current addition S80? Maybe with the diesel?

Okay, Okay, I did NOT mean 6-speed manual. What I get for typing quick

Anybody who has read the new S80 press releases posted elsewhere here will see that yes, they are using the 6-speed AUTO. Basically I see the new S80 as the R without the R lable. It has the V8, better AUTO tranny, full 4C, not much left out, unless the seats are less than the current R's...
