Sorry if it's been covered before, but I did a search and found nothing. I've always been under the impression that the newer model V70R is NOT capable of towing. However, while looking at the new ones with a sales person, we were discussing how I have a T5 but would love an R except it can't tow. She thought it could so she checked with the techs and general opinion was that it could. But, it did have some issues with the suspension under full loads. We don't tow much more than 2000lbs and only do it maybe a dozen trips a year.
Anyone tow with an R? Anyone know 100% for sure if you can (and if it's a good idea)? Any input is appreciated!

Re: Towing with newer model R. (alstensby)

Aside from potentially wanting to add a tranny cooler for long-distance hauling (if you have the automatic), I can't see why towing with the R would be a no-no. More power, bigger brakes, and the same frame as the T5 should be good, no? XC70s can tow fine, so AWD isn't a show stopper.

I checked the '07 owners manual, and there's nothing under the trailer towing section that differentiates an R from any other V70. Here's what it has to say:

Quote, originally posted by Owners Manual »

Volvo recommends the use of Volvo trailer hitches that are specially designed for the vehicle.
- Maximum trailer weight recommended by Volvo is:
Trailers without brakes: 1650 lbs (750 kg)
Trailers with brakes: 2" (50 mm) ball - 3300 lbs (1500 kg), 1 7/8" (47 mm) ball - 2000 lbs (900 kg). Re: Towing with newer model R. (02s60t5)

Now that I think about it, I recall a picture in the R forum of JimLill towing his VW racer with his V70R. No issues reported, and certainly not contra-indicated by the manufacturer.
