All,
I know this has been discussed before but I wasn't seeing what I wanted in the archives. Our family is looking to take a vacation at the end of the summer and tow a trailer with the XC90 ('04 2.5T AWD/7 pass). I am fully aware of Volvo's posted towing limits.
Has anyone towed greater than the 500lb max?
The tongue weight bothers me since most RV places are stating tongue weight should be 10% of the trailer's weight. If so, we are tongue weight restricted to a 2000lb trailer. Doesn't seem right does it?
This is a one time (for now) deal, so I don't want to buy a load leveler/weight distributor and run up the expenses. Thoughts?
Also planning on switching to synthetic engine oil and getting the transmission oil changed also as precautions.

Thanks,
Steve
The XC90 is now 56kmi and counting without a problem!

Re: Towing questions (prowlerflyer)

I don't know if it varies by model year or hitch setup but for our '05 with Hidden Hitch the tongue weight is 10% of max tow weight which puts it at 500 lbs.

However, there are other limiting factors such as whether you have trailer brakes (if no, the towing capacity is only 1700 lbs) and the load in the XC90. The 5000-lb limit assumes no more than 2 people weighing 300 lb total (ha!) and no cargo. Every added person or cargo drops the towing capacity to the point that towing is not recommended at all with 7 people.
What will be your passengers & cargo, and what are you wanting to tow?

Re: Towing questions (XC-Ski)

The only problem with the 10% rule is, at anything above 2000lbs the stated max tongue weight (198lbs) in the manual is exceeded. It does not seem to vary the allowable tongue weight with configuration. There is my confusion. I will have 2 adults, one three year old and our gear, that's it. The trailer will have trailer brakes.
I've towed much larger loads so, towing in of itself is not the worry. I used to drive a 45ft long 5th wheel with a dualie. I've noticed Volvo dropped the towing weights for the 2.5T in'05. Although since the chassis, brakes, suspension is the same for all XC90's, max towing weight shouldn't be much different.
Steve

Re: Towing questions (prowlerflyer)

Well, yes, the '04 manual states that the recommended hitch tongue weight is 198 lb for trailers over 2650 lbs. This caused a bit of confusion for anyone who saw it--some of us actually read the manual! Two years ago I asked Volvo customer service about this and some other inconsistencies in the towing specs, and the final answer was that the accessory engineers and chassis engineers sometimes disagree. The impression I got was that they had simply converted some specs from Euro numbers and hadn't thought it through.
The next year Volvo provided more detailed and realistic specs which are the ones I follow. For 3 passengers weighing 450 lbs total it says the towing capacity is 4500 lbs with a 450 lb tongue load. You should be fine if you use the shortest possible ball mount of the proper height, add some air to the tires, and drive conservatively.
