Re: Touch Screen Installed to Replace Head Unit ([email protected])

Good find. I've spent many hours digging through the mp3car forums--it's full of brilliant, obsessed perfectionists.
Also check out his earlier attempts (which was linked incorrectly in his post):

I think he is the first person to actually remove the head unit (except for the display, it sounds like). I'm sure the dead steering wheel controls will drive him insane--let's see how long until he gets those working, too.

Re: Touch Screen Installed to Replace Head Unit (Carbsumer)

Now I remember finding that post back in January when I was thinking of going 100% carPC myself and that's where I'd picked up the part that the display can't be removed from the car.
Which also reminded me of a 'possibility' for steering wheel controls in another thread:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulleti...ering
I contacted that individual and learned that in order to remove the steering wheel buttons, he had to remove the air bag as the bracket for the steering wheel buttons went behind a part of the airbag. I didn't like that idea. Hopefully PAC will release their CAN-BUS interface soon.
I've done a lot of research on carPCs, installed a few front ends on a test pc I have, but it seems that no matter what, it's a constant project that one is always tinkering with. And I personally don't want just a touchscreen for music, it's just not the best interface IMO.

Re: Touch Screen Installed to Replace Head Unit (t6tim)

Nice work indeed, although he could have done a better job in blending the screen with the panel.
Anyway, I'm doing the same thing but for the s40. I think this week i'll be able to show what i've accomplished.
Cheers
