Hi everyone,
I'm about to purchase my first-ever Volvo (2009 S40) since the 0% financing is a great incentive. I keep hearing conflicting stories about the 2010 model which supposedly comes with better stock audio, but might cost a lot more.
Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks much
Peter

Re: Total newbie about to buy an S40 - wondering about 2010 audio upgrades (projektor)

To be honest, I never even looked seriously into getting a new model from a dealer as the depreciation is a complete downer. But if you are and you'd prefer to buy from a dealer, I'd almost say go with the 09 as I don't think there are really that many differences to justify the gap in price. My real recommendation would be to buy a certified pre-owned if available, from 07+ as they have the aux in built into the vehicle, have more warranty, etc, for a lower cost. Good luck!

Re: Total newbie about to buy an S40 - wondering about 2010 audio upgrades (carreragt7)

In my opinion I the 2004.5-2007 looks better too, It may not look as modern but just looks like it was designed neater. The 2008+ look too un proportional in my taste.
But as Carrera said getting an 07 with a built in aux-in would be a great choice and would save you alot of money! If the sound isn't up to your standars you can use some of that extra money to upgrade aftermarket or even through the dealer.

Just my opinion, let us know what you decide on!

carreragt7, Kallvin22 these are great points and you've made me rethink this. This Saturday is my self-imposed deadline to make the final decision, but I think I will go with your suggestions and look for a low mileage, 07-08 instead.
Many thanks,
Peter

Re: Total newbie about to buy an S40 - wondering about 2010 audio upgrades (USAF 2010 T5)

Hey, someone has to buy new Volvos to keep the company going.
If you are into audio SQ then get the Premium Sound system. Other than the speakers, the sound systems in these cars are too much a pain in the butt to upgrade as the components are spread throughout the car and linked by a proprietary fiber optic system and integrated with the climate control and other stuff.
I am picky about SQ but I have found the Prem Sound system surprisingly good even without the sub. From that I understand the Dynaudio system in the newer models is even better than my '05. You won't regret getting the Prem Sound system.
Stan

I just got my 2k9 with non-dynaudio setup. It thumps along nicely, has satelite, usb/mp3, and aux. I'm more of a motor guy, so saving the cash when I still get usb/aux was a no-brainer for me. The dynaudio is a kick in the pants however if your an audio buff.

not all '07s come with an aux out. Mines an '07 and didn't...
I think '07s get the same warranty / service as well. Maybe even worse? I only had the first service paid for me, the rest was out of pocket...
Maybe yall are thinking '08s+ with the free service to 50k?

Re: Total newbie about to buy an S40 - wondering about 2010 audio upgrades (chrisasdf)

Not that audio features are crucial to the success of whatever automaker, but I was still pretty disappointed when I found out that the basic model had no mp3 playback capability. Given the fact that upgrading volvo's integrated audio deck is (I think) pretty much impossible, you would think mp3 would be offered in this $40K car (Canada).
I tested an 09 with the upgraded audio (no Dyno) and the sound was decent (no low-high freq. distortion at high volume). I guess I could live with some sort of an iPod setup with Aux In, but it's still a slight annoyance.
Is this the wrong forum to ask about most common mechanical problems with 07-08s?
Thanks everyone,
Peter.

No your definitely in the right forum!
Sounds like you need to go with a 2007 with Dynaudio
