We got an '01 V70 2.4T last October... and we love it. A perfect family car, with integrated boosters and 3rd row seat. My wife is the main driver. Kids are happy. But I sure wish I got to drive it every day, heh. heh... to the point where I'm ready to retire my '90 760 wagon and pick up another new Volvo for my daily commute (1+ hour each way).
I test drove the S60 last weekend. Handsome car (on the outside)... but I was left wanting in the "V for versatility" department (I want something that I can throw my bicycle in the back of). So now I'm back to looking at the wagons.
So I'm asking you T5 owners out there... will a T5 make that much of a difference in my life? Any issues with the Geartronic and the T5? (it works fine with our 2.4T). Anything else I should know/keep in mind?
And just to cover my bases, I'm also checking out the XC's... I like the feature set, but I'm not sure about losing out on gas mileage (due to my long commute). But I imagine I would feel a lot more solid if I ever were to hydroplane, etc.
I've been reading the posts on Swedespeed for the past few weeks (good stuff, guys!), and I can't hold back anymore. So please help me break out of my wagon choice delirium!
[This message has been edited by daimoni (edited 04-07-2002).]

Hydroplaning? What's that?
Should have added my sig to make the joke relevant.

01 XC
[This message has been edited by coastal (edited 04-07-2002).]

I recently went through the same thing, but in my case the choice was easier.
My wife wanted the XC and I wanted the T5. I'm trading in a Nissan Maxima for the Volvo, and had driven the new Maxima as well, which was my previous compromise of practicality and sportiness. Both my wife and I drive 5-speed and wanted to stick with it (no pun intended).
Bottom line:
- XC- Love the look, great utility and 4WD but, smaller engine with a heavier car, automatic only and as much as its not an SUV it's not a sports car either. I think you'll get less MPG as well.
- T5- With the 5-speed, 17" wheels and the interior trim that comes with the T5, it may not be a sports car either, but its the best balance I could come up with. I didn't get the DSTC (its an expensive option in Canada) but with that, STC, and a good set of snow tires, winter's not going to bother you.
[This message has been edited by nyerinmontreal (edited 04-07-2002).]
[This message has been edited by nyerinmontreal (edited 04-07-2002).]

daimoni,
Welcome to Swedespeed!
I guess that you should figure out what you want out of your new V70. Question, do you really need AWD plus extra's that the XC has or would you like to have the extra performance and lithe of the T5.
I just saw my first Ocean Race XC yesterday, and it was a beautiful looking vehicle, but if it were up to me, I think I would pick up a Venetian Red/Graphite T5 with DSTC and 17-inch Amalthea wheels as my new car.

-Drew
I should be getting mine with Venetian Red, taupe leather and Amalthea next week (if all goes well) -- just like in the picture.
[This message has been edited by nyerinmontreal (edited 04-07-2002).]

I'm letting go of the XC concept... I know don't need it. So there. That was easy.
I guess my real question is how much more "noticable oomph" will I be getting by going with a T5? My dealer was somewhat disparaging towards the T5 and went on say how the low-pressure turbo in the 2.4T was better for hills, etc. - or is he just on crack? His eyes did look a little dialated... so I can't be sure.
Again, I look to those of you who actually drive T5's daily. By the way, my days of driving a stick (at least for commuting) are over. I'm sold on the Geartronic.
If I get another 2.4T, I plan to get the Convience, Cold Weather and Touring Packages with the added option of Integrated Booster Seats... or I could just spend a little more and get a T5 with most of those bells and whistles included... as well as roof rails and front fog lights.
I don't really know much about tires. And according the the Volvo website, 16's are standard for the T5. Sporty looks aside, would spending another $500 for 17's make a world of difference in daily driving... or would I just look cool? Again, I apologize for my lack of tire lore.
And now on to colors... our current 2.4T is White with Taupe/Lt. Taupe leather. I like the Taupe, and will get it again for the next car. I like White (call me boring and safety minded) but I want something different... Silver is nice, but I admit to staring fondly at that image of the Venetian Red T5. Last week, I saw an old 1950's Volvo wagon truckin' down the freeway. And it looked spendid in deep red. I thought to myself, "I want to drive my wagon like that, years from now".
-Bradley

[This message has been edited by daimoni (edited 04-07-2002).]

Hi,
first off, why is it in bad weather I _only_ see 4x4's in the ditch? Hydroplaning and ice affect all that drive to fast given conditions. Just beware that since we all have four wheels, it is the brain that controls them that keeps them on the pavement. (maybe I should have seen the sig file... 8) )
I have a T5 manual. Did not like the geartronic. Not enough control of the torque.
Good to see that you are letting go of the XC. For commuting, I am not sure if that would be better on gas since you will like the power of the T5. All volvo wagons rock, my last was an 88 740. I went straight to the T5 and it was great. Plus, getting the XC towed if you are in a fire lane will probably really screw with the viscous coupling in the drive train in the XC.
My opinion is if you need DSTC you are going to fast anyways given conditions, and if you need it, you probably dont know how to drive and control the car that fast in terms of under/oversteer and weighting of the car anyways. I know I sure need to know more about all that stuff and am going to take a driving course for it. In the end, I agree, the DSTC is not worth the money.
Get the 17's for the control in the corners, my 16 winters really roll with the weight of the car in a hard turn, 17's much less.
good luck and cheers
sporto gordo

Hahaha!
Is it perhaps because he cannot find a T5? (they are harder to get than 2.4Ts, afterall)...
The 2.4T is very quick but "it ain't no T5", if I want to paraphrase an elder politician. They are pretty different. I suggest you take both on an extended test drive, perhaps for more than 20 miles, each. Then, you will be able to determine which car suits your needs best.
As T5 driver, I will give you my BIASED opinion and tell you that...NOTHING beats the exhilaration of the high pressure turbo "rush"!!!
Yannis

One more question guys... in your experience, how do the 'sport leather' seats differ in feel/comfort from the regular leather seats in the V70's? Which would be better for long commutes?
And since I already know what my 2.4T feels like, all I really need to do is test drive the T5. And I'll make sure to put it through its paces.
I'm signing the papers on the H-E loan this week (I need a new roof, etc. as well as a car. )... after that, I'll be good to go. My wife is being very cool about me getting a new car. I mean, I need to be safe and secure, don't I?
She hasn't balked at the concept of spending more $ to get a T5... but when I showed her the 17's tires, she just rolled her eyes. Heh. Heh. Oh, well. We'll see.

[This message has been edited by daimoni (edited 04-08-2002).]

The T5 seats are definitely more of a "bucket" seat but as far as confort ANY Volvo seat (no matter what the model) is comfortable for the long commute.
Yannis
