Hows it going guys ? On Monday I'm taking the final steps toward purchasing a 2004 S60R 6Speed. Its got 83,000 on it. Any common problems with an R like this. I'm assuming its been reasonably taken care of but, the insight of you wise swedespeed members would be more than appreciated. So the question is, What are the top 5 (plus or minus a few) problems (anything) to be looking out for?

I will actually try to be helpful
1 angle gear is AWD working or is angle gear case leaking?
2 clutch, the engagement point will be high, that is normal for these cars, you need to looksfor signs of slave cylinder failure. The brakes and slave cylinder share the same fluid so if the brake fluid is low or appears to have been topped off recently (like a clean reservoir cap) or if the clutch pedal does not feel right theyre may be a problem
That my $.02 worth

You might research the threads here to find an indy other R owners have used in your area and then take the car to them for a once over. They'll be familiar with the issues that can creep up on these cars.
Angle gear
Slave
wheel bearings

Re: (steamboatsig)

The biggest problem you'll face with "identifying" issues on this car is that aside from wheel bearings, most do NOT produce growing, distant early warning symptoms (yes, the DEW line, I'm old).
So unless you pay someone to drop the trans and look at clutch, slave and angle gear, you have NO idea what's going on. Same with shocks, etc.
Best bet is to buy the car from someone who can give you a good history on it, tell you how it's driven, what has been heard, etc. And from someone who's obviously cared for and about it.

I agree with Needsdecaf, a lot of these problems will be hard to identify off a test drive and looking around the car. Your best bet is to hope that the PO is honest and if you can discern his/her driving habits that would help too. If they drove hard, dropped the clutch a lot, and liked to powerslide around in the snow...you probably want to look at another R. If they drove the kids to school, took it on a few road trips, and seemed "conservative" in general with the car, that might be a good bet.

The number one thing to look for is a Slave Cylinder leak. This is a very pricy repair, about $2500 without the flywheel. Mine did not need the flywheel.
To figure this out, look for brake fluid in the bell housing weep hole under the transmission. If it clean, stick a paper towel up the hole and see if you get fluid. If you do, you better get $3000 off as you will lose 2 days with the car and have a hefty repair bill. This is best done a a dealer as there are some updated parts that make it work better. By the way, the trans has to be removed for this repair. Thus the stupid cost. The book has it at 16 hours of labor.
The second is axle ping. This can be heard by accelerating while turing hard to either direction. This is typically a easy fix, but if post warranty, will have to be paid for. The axles have to be tightened.
Third is wheel bearings. If you hear a roar, steer the car side to side hard. If the roar goes away, then a wheel bearing is shot. I had these replaced on my car as well, rear.
Fourth, The angle gear is also a pain to fix, I have not had this failure, but others have. There are many posts on it. My friend that is a Volvo tech at a dealer says the repair of this part is best as a replacement as they are impossible to get back together right. This would be costly post warranty as well.
Few more things.
If it has the "Blue" color interior, chances are the front seat will need to be dyed as the color cracks and wear on the bolster is common.
Check the oil and open the oil fill. A car that has good oil changes will not be goopy. The turbo in this car cooks the crap out of oil. You need to be sure you get one that has had TLC. And change the oil often.

I have 47k mi on mine. Love the car. It is great in traffic as the boost at speed allows you to punch into holes. Great for trying to get off a hwy. The seats are also the most comfortable of any car that I have ever driven, rental or owned. It is a bit quirky as the engine is not really smooth and the trans is a bit clunky. I have posted here in the past under a different name, but I could not remember what name and email. I just made a new one.
Forgot one, Check the reverse lights. If they are out, and the fuse and blubs are ok, the trans switch has to be replaced. That is a few hundred for the repair.
