I just got my car back from the dealer for my 30k service. I gave them a case of Mobil 1 plus one additional 1/2 quart bottle. When I got home I let the car sit for about an hour and checked the oil. The oil was well above the high mark and right on the first bend of the dipstick. Should I worry about this?
Btw, they took care of the axle clunk after I took the service foreman for a ride. We didn't even have to leave the driveway before he said he heard the noise.

Re: Too much oil? (steamboatsig)

So they basically they put in 6.5 qts? Why did you give them the extra 1/2 when you know the R only uses 5.5? Or maybe you didn't know. IMHO 1 extra qt. is a bit too much and if it's right before the bend, then it's right at the edge of absolute maximum or so the manual says. I would take out 1/2 to 1 qt.
What dealer did you go to btw? I'm bringing mine in for 30k service to Rusnak and fixing the axle ping is on my list. I usually go to Bozzani but then I just read about how bad they were in that past So Cal dealer thread.

Re: Too much oil? (PhilUp)

I had a case of oil in my trunk, and I had an extra 1/2 quart from when I topped it off about a month ago. I guess they assumed I wanted it in there. How do I take out oil?
I brought it to Rusnak. I worked with David Wilson who helped me out a lot. He had the shop foreman go for a ride with me. We never left the driveway. I put it in reverse to back out and right away it went clunk. He said, "was that it?" I said yes. As I put it back in 1st and slowly let the clutch out, it went clunk again.
Dave said they put new bolts in with special washers. I assume the did the XC90 axle bolts with the rubber washer fix. I'll let you know how long it lasts.

I've seen something from Griots Garage where it sucks oil out from the dipstick port. Basically a pump with a skinny tube.
Thanks for the info. I'll try to talk to David Wilson when I get there.

You are lucky, I had to beg my dealer to do it, yours did it because they probably did their homework or someone begged them to do it.

Re: Too much oil? (Rangeball)

There has been some confusion as to how much oil an R holds. Even Volvo seems a little confused. In the manual for my 2004 V70R is says, and I quote:
Capacity (including oil filter): 6.1 US qts. page 138
Capacity (including oil filter and oil coller): 7.1 US qts. page 138
Engine oil volume, V70R: 5.5 US qts. page 148
I have been putting in 6 qts with oil change when I change the filter. I usually have to add a qt at 2500 miles if I have been running hard. This is the first car I have ever had to add oil to between oil changes. (with synthetic, I change my oil every 3000 to 3500 miles). I use Castrol GTX 10-30 full synthetic. I never had to add oil before I changed to synthetic, which seems odd. oclv

6.5-7 Quarts at every oil change in my 04 R at 25,000 miles. That is 7 oil changes. Some done by me and some at the dealer. The key is to let the oil drain for 30-60 min so ALL of the excess is out. Rick.
Re: Too much oil? (Mash)

I am really not too worried about the oil anymore, but I am concerned that they didn't rotate my tires like it is listed on the 30K service. I wonder what else they skipped.

Re: Too much oil? (steamboatsig)

This has been recently discussed, cause I raised the issue:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=62268

" I recently brought in my R at the dealer and brought my own case of Mobile 1 Synthetic 10W 30 from Costco. I did not want to get charged $50.00 again when I can buy it for $28.00 at Costco. So anyway, I brought my R to the dealer and he told me the case of oil was not enough and that the R takes 6 1/2 quarts of oil. Can anyone verify this? So the 1/2 quart I was missing, they tossed it in for free. I had to take my R to keep up with the warrenty service since at the time, my 2004 R has only 7458 miles on it. On a side note, how often should the pollen filter be changed? Thanks."
Anyway, I called the service guy and he said that I was fine. If it blows up, then I will blame him.

I will keep saying this until the little baby Jesus comes down from the sky with a white nightgown and little angel wings and lands on the hood of my S60R and that is exactly 6 quarts of oil is just fine.

I'll just keep checking the dipstick and wiping off the excess until I get it at the right level. Lol.

Re: Too much oil? (steamboatsig)

While this sounds OK, there are a number of engines which will have major trouble with overfill. The problem comes IF the crank throws hit the oil. That can exhaust the anti-foaming additive. I have heard engines with valve timing messed up be the oilfoam; seen them cured by draining off the excess. To be on the safe side, I'd drain the extra.

Senilesurfer
2004 V70 R GT IPD, JRL+ senilesurfer's pipe tips
