The other day I was giving my friend a ride and he noticed significant "chatters" when gearshift takes place. He asks if something was loose underneath? I told him that's just the way it is, and he laughed.
this is embarrasing I wonder if this car is put together by union workers?

Re: too many "chatters" when drivetrain is in motion. (stevectsai)

I agree that it is very noisy. When I'm pulling into the parking garage at work and roll down the windows I can hear all sort of linkages and drivetrain noises. It is embarrassing, but since there are so few sticks around I don't have a good base to compare to.

Mine is as quiet as church mouse.
The only noise I hear once in a while is flywheel clatter.
(Yes, that is what that sometime weird clatter is)

I have the same complaint about my R as well. My service manager said there was a linkage issue in earlier models (such as yourselves) but that it had been fixed in MY 06. I don't think so. When engaging the clutch between gears 1 &2 and 2&3, it is nearly impossible to shift without hearing clunks and chatters. I'm taking it in Tuesday.

I have a VERY early 04, never had a problem with the linkage and never a noise.
It was adjusted once and only once by a GOOD Volvo (total oxymoron here) mechanic

I hear a little clatter from the drivetrain if I don't keep the engine revs up a bit during the gear change.
Try keeping you right foot into it a bit during a couple of shifts . . . I'd be surprised if it isn't a lot quieter.
- Mark

Mine's pretty noisy too and I have a VERY early 04 as well, took delivery in May '03. I believe I got a shift cable replaced once but mine's been chattering ever since and at 26,000 miles I can't say it's getting any worse. My friend's 350Z is pretty noisy too on shifting so it's probably not THAT uncommon.

I have the same chatter noises, but not so much when shifting... more often when driving over bumps and DEFINATELY when powering down the car. The service dept. told me it's the sway bar links before they even looked at the car... after looking at the car, they tried to blame it on my aftermarket heat shield ... Grabbed the mechanic and proved that was not it, and they took the car back in... now they have a steering rack on order! Hope that fixes it... geeze. (luckilly the regonal service director was in town and went over my car with them... otherwise, not too sure they'd have ordered a whole new rack to fix a chatter!) Anyway, it seems Volvo's with chatters almost always ends up being the swaybar links... though obviously not if is is directly linked to normal gearshifting.

Some of this sounds like the axle spline clunking. If you are in 1st gear, and you add some throttle (to load the splines) or take away throttle (unload), can you hear a clink or clunk? You should be able to hear it in reverse and also in 2nd, doing the same load/unload action.
It starts out as a clink and then as it wears it turns into a clunk. My dealer would do nothing about the clink ("normal, they all do it"), but when it turned into the clunk, they did the Loctite band-aid repair.

nope...i had the axle issues with my T5 and this is completely different. I don't think anything is wrong since mine has done it from the time I picked it up in mid-April and a lot of others report the same thing.
It would be nice though if there were something that could be done so it was a quiet transition between gears

Re: (phuz)

Got the car back yesterday. Apparently they were able to duplicate the clunking sound, and determined it was the infamous axle splines acting up (which I also complained about). They locktited the axle splines and that was that. I haven't had time to drive the car much yet, but the clunking/chatter seems to still be there when engaging the clutch at low rpms in lower gears. I think this may just be a characteristic of the car, as I can avoid the unpleasant sounds if i shift higher than 3500 rpm (approximately). Maybe I just need to drive my car harder
