I have this 05 I bought, super nice R but it has one of these little issues and before I throw parts on it I would like to describe the problem.
Amazingly I have never had either of these problems so I don't know what each one feels like.
I accellerate at medium throttle then in mid range it either stumbles or "lurches" then goes on.
It does not repeat the issue the same way twice and a couple of times it actually drove smoothly all the way through the rev range.
Does this sound like the BCV
or the fuel rail sensor?

I NEED AN ANSWER NOW

JRL, Ive got these exact symptoms.
Have new Fuel Rail Sensor, new TCV, checked plugs and coils.
From searching around SS, I still need to try:
-PEM clean and ECM reset
-ECM and TCM software updates
-Vacuum hoses
Good luck, please let me know if you or your fabulous dealer figures this out!!!
And dammit, I think you described the symptoms more perfectly than I ever have.

However, sometimes it would not do it at all, even after getting it fully warmed up. With the symptom there we could still get it up to speed (160Km/hr) but only if we did it slowly as any more than about 3/4 throttle and it would stumble. It also eventually started to have little stumbles/abrupt dips in RPM's right after start-up while rolling out of the garage. It eventually showed some missfire codes. You has it on VADIS yes? Getting any missfire DTC's?
After having my XC90 in for a couple visits to a my GREAT Volvo Tech, and with a long 1500Kmx2 trip mixed in between and with some caculated and cautious throwing of parts at this problem in the end it was solved with spark plug replacements (which we were due for anyway as per the recommened service interval for the plugs).
Can you just throw a new set of plugs at it? Are you due for new plugs any way?
LTA

It has nothing to do with any parts, you get full boost but it can hit a wall at about 3500-4000 RPM and just go (VERY) flat for a split second, like a big stumble.
The fix is a Volvo ECU flash, it came out about 12/04 or thereabouts.
Your Volvo file should say whether the car had it or not, it was not an automatic upgrade unless your car exibited symptoms
If you had a flash like IPD, etc, it would actually shut off for a split second.

Re: (JRL)

Mine did the same exact thing. It was the fuel rail pressure sensor. They changed it under warranty at the dealership.
