So without making this sound like an advertisement.

I have been transferred to Singapore. Not sure what to do with my car.

I have an '07 s40 with 21k miles on it. KBB says $16k-17k value. I paid out the door $21k. Is it wise to keep it for a few years (storage / loan to family) or just offload it asap.

Anyone have exp with car max?

To be honest you probably won't get KBB out of it, but if you hold onto it you probably won't get a lot out of it if you tried to sell it when you get back. I'd say attempt to sell now for around KBB, if it doesn't pan out drop it a bit and see, if that doesn't work put it in storage. Don't take a huge loss, but factor in the value will go down as time goes by...

If you dont plan on coming back stateside in 1-2 years it would be wise to sell it, put the money in a CD and collect the interest. Car Max will give you less money than KBB but money is liquid, an asset sitting in storage isnt. Besides gas sipping cars are the in thing, there are tons of H2/H3s and Escalades on the lots!
