I'm buying a set of Titans for my 1998 S70 t-5. What would be the ideal tire size for these wheels in order to protect them from the elements(potholes etc...)
I would sacrifice protection over looks.

Thanks

I believe the stock size for that wheel would be 205 45 17. You could go higher profile for more protection, but it might rub and you'd want to get your speedometer recalibrated.

I just orderd 17" rims for my car and also was looking at a set of tires. I went to Sears and looked at there tire catalog and compared 4 different tire sizes My car came with a 15" rim and uses a 195/60/15. If I am right the height comes to about a 24.1 the 205/45/17 is 24.4 and the 215/45/17 is 24.8 and the 205/50/17 are 25.1(all in Falkens). I was thinking of going with the 215/45/17 because of height and it shouldn't change the speedo more then 3-5
mph . I would go to a tire store and compare the sizes for yourself.
George is right the 205/45/17 came stock on the 850 R and are about the same size as the 195/60/15. Falken also compared the different rpms each tire turned the 195/60/15 and the 205/45/17 both turned 836 rpms.
BTW where did you get the Titans ? I had bid $850.00 on a set on ebay and was outbid

Thanks for the help guys.
Jesse:
I'm actually buying the Titans from someone locally. I got a really good price for them, $550 for the set. I contacted the seller through the brickboard, and he was very resonable with the price. What wheels did you get?

Volvos70
I too have recently purchased Titans...I have already damaged one from a pothole strike...not too bad but the tire sidewall is bulging slightly and I am looking into new tires. Stock is 205/45/17 but I will likely go to 215/45/17 the larger width should help take some impact away but it will always be
a problem with lower profile rubber and alloy rims. I appreciate the performance of the larger tires but with it comes the risk!
Toyo Proxes FZ4 are a good all around performance tire and run about $100 in the 205 and $120 in hte 215. The TS1 is higher performance.
Either way they have to be more forgiving thhan hte pricey P zeros mine are shod with
Are your rims in good shape? $550 is a great price Look carefully for damage particularly on the inside edge where the rim is not supported by the spokes.
Obviously high speed balance and frequent rotations too.
Good Luck...they will look great but be careful.
Jim

Yeah, the guy was really nice. Of course the wheels do have some scuffing, nothing I can't live with. I'm actually planning on getting refinished.
I really like the rims you bought. They look a lot like the MAS wheels. Those are VOXX rims right?
On a separate note, I remember people complaining that their Titans and Volans would often get bent. Was this due to the Pirelli tires that they came with? I've heard those tires weren't well suited for the soft Volvo alloy.

Thanks for the info Jim. What condition were
your Titans in when you purchased them.
Brian
QUOTE]Originally posted by TravelingIncognito:
Volvos70
I too have recently purchased Titans...I have already damaged one from a pothole strike...not too bad but the tire sidewall is bulging slightly and I am looking into new tires. Those wheels, as wheels go, I'm told are relatively soft. Combine that with the heavy weight of the 850 and they will bend.
I think I still know of a set of Tethys locally with no tires for like $700 or $750 or so. It is a used wheel shop here in the Baltimore, MD area that's had them for a while.

You should go with 215/45-17 for your car. This tire size will keep the speedometer from having to be corrected. Anything larger than this and you'll probably get some rubbing.
