I have been contemplating this project for some time and finally decided to refinish the black panel surrounding the spaceball shifter using OEM Volvo Titanium Pearl #455 (to match the car's exterior). The drab black plastic and dorky redundant shift map drove me nuts. Since others have detailed this process in the past, I'll skip the how-to instructions and step-by-step photos for now (IM me if you do have questions).
I am extremely pleased with the finished product. The metallic paint sparkles under direct sunlight and provides a nice glow both on cloudy days and at night, all while blending nicely with the other interior surfaces. I used a "dry" clear coat technique to achieve a nice lustre without excessive gloss. The overall effect is richer without looking tricked out. Overall, I think it looks great and could almost pass for stock to those unfamiliar with the car.
Here are the pics (the first was taken just before I was sharply scolded for making the kitchen smell like a paint factory)

Comments welcome - Tryg

Looks great!!!
But, what's that compartment behind the ****er (towards the rear of the car?) I thought the '04 models also had a 'scroll' door over that compartment.
-Eric

Not terribly energy efficient, but the cars look terrific inside and out when those lights are on.
Thanks for the input on the painting project. It's a great way for those of us with '04's to perk up the look of the interior. I cannot recommend this project enough, but it might only look good with the darker colors (excluding silver). Passion Red or Flash Green in an otherwise stock cabin would probably look a bit fugly.

- Tryg

That looks great. NOW work on doing the rest of that ugly black matted plastic throughout the rest of the car. That would look HOT!

Looks great! I've been debating the same thing, but if I did it, I would want to paint the vent surrounds Ti Grey as well.
Think it would much improve overall look of '04 dash, but still be subtle. Paint looks much more stock than the overlays that can accomplish same look.
Maybe once I get my car back and get my 4C fixed... in the shop for 3 weeks now for phone/cupholder swap...

Re: Titanium '04 shift surround - NO MORE SHIFT MAP!!! ("R" Kelly)

RKelley,
Painting the shifter surround sounds like it would be an awesome idea, but how much would paint for the project cost? I imagine that it's not going to simply be buy a bottle or two of touch up and there you have it. Would you just try and match it as best you could on your own?
Let me know what you find. I would be really interested in attempting it.
