Yes, I didnt think the HU850 had that great of bass response...so i came up with a fix. Having my MECP certification from when i worked at BestBuy, i came up with a simple, yet effective fix . Now on my setup, i wasn't going for competition spec, yet wanted quality deep bass. So i got the Alpine E 12" (2), and a P300 mono amp by Rockford Fosgate. Its all preference, so the only way to actually buy the best for your money, is to go out and listen...don't always go off numbers and stats..u buy it to hear it right? well anyways i got that with a sealed box. Along with a low-level output converter tapped in at the HU with the right rear speaker...use both R and L from the low-level converter wires to tap in only to one side because for some odd reason the HU creates some resistance when you tap in using both R and L rear speakers causing a loss of 40% in Signal strength = no signal to amp and no bass. Well, u get bass, just u have to turn the amp up. What i love about the volvo is the battery is in the rear of the car, so u dont have to run to amp kit up through the fire wall . So when installing TAKE UR TIME. Do it right the first time. Meaning hie the wires and organize them, thus makeing a clean install. Half asss it all you want but, u are paying for it lol. Below is a few pics showing my install...oh b4 i forget...when mounting the amp to the back of the left rear seat as i did, use sheet metal screws...the seat back is aluminum, not plastic like 98% of all the cars out there. Anyways ENJOY.

Very clean.

Dont laugh, i keep a bottle of 409, some tire shine, and some leather cleaner for just in case

Notice how i used 1" plastic washers to elevate the amp, 1 to keep it cool, 2 to allow the wires to be hidden.

In a former life, I installed a lot of car audio systems. I, too, found the S60R's audio system bass-deficient.
Has anyone ever tried just replacing the factory rear speakers with decent-quality 6x9s?

Re: Tired of little or no bass response? Well here's your fix! (Turbo Country)

The HU-650/850 HU's are notably bass deficient. With the advent of these HU's Volvo eliminated access to the hidden menu bass/treble adjustments and made them part of the factory configuration, i.e. untouchable. In doing so, they capped the bass response of the system. I speculate that they did this to eliminate all the warranty claims for loose door panels and, to some degree, blown drivers.
As far as your volume drop when connecting to both L and R channels, that is probably because your HU sees the additional load in series, i.e. the impedance is increased.

I thought this was going to be a post about lures, flies and casting technique.

I also speculate they turn the bass down so the factory amp doesn't overheat as quickly. I've used the EQ on my iPod with the "bass boost" setting, and the amp shut off after barely 45min of playing at normal volume levels.
It's ironic because unlike other 'premium systems' in cars like Lexus, BMW, Mercedes etc, the Volvos actually use large drivers, I mean, two 8" drivers in the front doors? Even the Mark Levinson speakers in the Lexus' typically top off at 6.5" woofers, and subsequently require a subwoofer somewhere else in the car. The Volvos have the ability to put out more bass than they do, yet it has been turned down.
Great job on the install, too, very clean. Favorite part are the plastic spacers between the amp and the mounting surface. Very smart, very professional.

Re: (Jexx)

When I installed my sub in my VR, I got a line-level converter and found that it sucked balls. Instead, I used the speaker-level signal sent to the sub harness and wired it into the amp's speaking-level input. Voila, great bass! If you have the sub harness, I highly recommend using it over tapping existing speaker wires.
