Tire/wheel damage & Caltrans

Sigh... coming back from Tahoe last night we nailed a invisible pothole on hw 80 by Colfax... wasn't even going that quickly coz of conditions, still enough to trash the wheel and tire. I've ordered a replacement set but I also want to make a claim on Caltrans for the damages... does anyone have a number to call by any chance? I'm staring at their website and they don't exactly make it easy.
I recall this topic coming up on here before for some reason . Tried a search but it seems to be broken ATM.
To make this an extra Volvo-specific topic... we saw two other cars with the tire blowouts from the same pothole... an older V70 wagon and an old 940? sedan. Thank Volvo for their excessive high speed damping I guess.

Hmm, good point! I do still have the tire/wheel with me, and I called the CHP with an incident report right after it happened.
I got lucky with ordering a replacement.. they are my snow tires mounted on some cheapish tire rack rims, I was sure they'd be out of the wheel, tire, or both by now but luckily they have the combo in stock.
Considering getting another wheel just to have a spare around in case, but that feels kinda silly...

The report is good. As I said it helps to have a picture but the report and a picture of the tire and wheel should do it.
Don't expect to gat paid quickly, the wheels of govt. turn slowly and when you all but forget about it, the check should come
JRL

My general experience with these things is you will only get paid IF someone else previously reported the pot hole (meaning the government agency had a chance to respond but hadn't yet before your incident.)
Perhaps a friend should call it in for you first...
