check out http://www.jonstintedtails.com. Basically it is a spray on tint that makes your red tail lights more red. Or you can pick a paint color and have them paint it on.
My tinted tails cost 85.
Go for it!! It will make your car stand out from the crowd.

Here is an article I wrote on another forum that details the steps I used on my SLK ... VHT nite-shades works, or as the article says, you can actually use polycarbonate window tint spray for RC cars (since most tails are made out of Polycarbonate anyway) with a clear coat top coat:
http://www.bnzsport.com/forums...tails
I always prefer a good DIY .

Re: Tinting the tail lights????????????????????????????? (Quick Brick)

I had mine done at a body shop. I had it done at the same time as my EVOLVE kit installation. The guy who did it said it is a combo of black paint and some kind of clear coat. They spray it on. they can make it as dark or as light as you want.
I didn't want it too dark...since in CA it is "technically" illegal to not have "red" tail lights. in daylight, there is just BARELY a hint of red to mine...but htey are very dark. but not totally black. I recently had the car back to the body shop to have my front end touched up (rock chips, curbs.. and I had them smoke my side markers black...so they can do it whatever color you want...
I think it looks awesome. It really gives the car a nice look. I don't have a pic of it yet, but I bought a license plate cover that is smoked...it was dirt cheap at the local auto parts store..but i put that over my license plate...and now my rear tails are smoked and my license plate cover is smoked..plus my windows are tinted. it all goes together nicely and looks sweet.

and YES the red illumination of tail lights and brake lights comes right through the tint NO problem.

you can also see tha the REAR part of mine is dark...but the little part under the EVOLVE "eyebrow" thing...on the SIDE of the tail lights...he made that black!

Or is it just a matter of it not decreasing light output below a certain threshold (e.g., legal minimum amount of light)? I've wondered the same thing when I've seen cars--well mostly pickup trucks around here--with the headlights tinted or with some sort of tinted plastic shield in front of them.

But, yes it does reduce the light output, just not enough that it matters.
I've also seen those black covers on headlights every once in a while. I am sure they reduce the light coming out of the headlights, but not as much as you'd think.
Also think of the rear window tint designs that you see with stars and stripes, etc. You can't see in there but you can definitely see out.
Bottom line, it is not that much that it would affect others to see you at night.
Actually I am a little bit off; this is taken from jonstintedtails.:
Does the light still shine through the tint?
A: A light tint will reduce the light output by average of only 5%-10%. A medium tint will reduce it by maybe on average of 10%-15%. And a dark tint will reduce the light output on average of 15%-20%. Check the photo gallery to see pics of various levels of tint. Please note that the amount of light output lost will vary on the vehicles tail light design and light output in stock form.

Re: Tinting the tail lights????????????????????????????? (bschurr)

Thanx bschurr,
... and FWIW, shortly after I tinted them, I had a single tail light go out and EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD felt the need to pull up along side of me to inform me that I had a burned bulb on one side ... I mean like 10 people in a single day ... weird .
I mean, normally you see all kinds of ppl driving around with burned bulbs and nobody ever seems to be bothering them .

Re: Tinting the tail lights????????????????????????????? (kenschel)

I'm not trying to say that the tint doesn't affect the light output at ALL...but it's minimal.
I recall reading somewhere that these tints only drop the light output by 5% or something.
All I know, is I've seen the tail lights at night....my wife was driving my car, and I was following her in the other car..and at night - you can't tell the lights are tinted. You just see red lights like all the other cars.
tinting headlights is something I considered.....but I haven't done it. i wonder how much it would hurt light output....
tinted tails are definitely a nice looking mod. I got the idea from the EVOLVE cars....the blue car and the silver "victor hammer" car had it done and it looked nice.

Re: Tinting the tail lights????????????????????????????? (23109VC)

I would think if one did tint the front lights that chipping would be a big issue. Once chippied it would look terrible. Then what????Sand the glass???Not.
