When should the Timing belt be replaced on my s80? I have the turbo model. Is it a DIY replacement or is it very involved? How much should I be ready to pay for this job? Is the water pump replaced at the same time? <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/confused.gif" BORDER="0">

Re: Timing belt (05S80Driver)

You can do it yourself, but you'll have to buy a cam locking tool. IPD sells one. Mess that up, and you'll be in a whole world of trouble.

Your manual states when it should be replaced. You'll likely need to replace an idler wheel and tension pulley too. Pick up a Haynes or similar manual. My car required replacement at 105,000 miles and $400 to a dealer. I tried myself and spun the crank pulley just an inch and couldn't get the cams to alighn properly again - hence the $400 to the dealer to do the job correctly. I did not replace the water pump. Read your manual for time/mileage to replace things.
