I just took my 2004 v70r w/101k in to have timing belt maintenace performed. My mechanic called and said everything was in remarkably good condition except for the variable valve timing cam sprocket. He says it has about 1/8" of play. He has not run into this before and is a little weary of this. Does anyone know if this is acceptable or does it need to be changed out?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Timing Belt/ variable valve timing cam sprocket (d3)

Um, is it prohibitively expensive to change out the sprocket? I don't know if it's supposed to have play (although if it moves as part of the variable timing aspect, perhaps it is supposed to have some play without the motor running). What $$ were you quoted to have this done?

I'm curious about that too. There is some free movement when there is no oil pressure so I'm wonder if he's talking about runout or lateral movement. I've seen the CVVT's go bad but almost always its from oil sludge contamination. Either that or a tech that puts the t-belt on w/o locking the cam gears and spins one of the cam gears a tooth off. It generally causes a CEL for the CVVT. The CVVT is fine but timing is off a tooth or two. This can be viewed in VIDA under camshaft adaption.

And what's with the 1.5-2.0 hrs labor? Once the timing belt is off, its only one bolt that holds it to the cam. I could see an extra .1 hr at the most, thats POINT ONE hour. http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif

Re: (Oceans60R)

He said their is considerably more play on the intake sprocket than on the outtake sprocket. the sprocket will move in and out about 1/8". the labor is because you have to pull everything off the other side of the engine and put a jig on it to hold everything in place.

I think you should go to a different mech since its litterly a pop the belt offf remove three 8mm nuts then large torks bolt for the cover then another torks bolt to remove the sproket itslef then everything back on , just make sure before you take it off to set everything at TDC
