He was in front of me during my drive home on Friday. We were both trying to get ahead of a small pack of slow moving cars. When an opening appeared, we both took the opportunity to get around in the right lane.
Side point: If you don't like driving, are afraid of driving, or don't want to pass, then don't drive in the left lane (especially on a 2 lane parkway). I don't get why some people, especially people who drive slowly - 10-15mph under the limit - sit in the left lane when they're not passing anyone, there's no one in the right lane, and no one in front of them!
Anyway, some jerk who fits the description in my side point decided to play around by cutting the Boxster off in the right lane as he tried to slowly get by the slow moving traffic. So, I let enough space open up for the guy to re-enter the pack in front of me as we passed in the left lane. After all was clear, the Boxster took off with me right behind. He huffed and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, but as hard as he tried he couldn't pull away. He then pulled to the right, smiled and gave a huge thumbs up (which I kindly returned). He then swiftly pulled back behind and got smaller and smaller in my rear view mirror until I let up as we approached traffic.
The big smile and look of astonishment on his face said it all as we gave one another the standard wave when I exited the parkway. "Yes, it is a Volvo and yes, the engine is stock."
-Eric

Re: Thumbs Up from Boxster Driver... (Sue Esponte)

There are a lot of idiots on the Merritt. Although, much the same can be said about 95 and 91 as well.

I was in the area a few weeks ago and drove the Merritt in our fully laden minivan. You can bet I was missing the R that day.

I hate the left lane hoggers as well. I usually move out of the left lanes even if no one is in it, because, well, it is a passing lane. I just wished more people would do the same, especially if the lanes next to them are moving at the same speed.
On a related note regarding Boxsters, and this is not a contest of speed, but I was having fun blasting through my gears when I pulled up next to an older gentleman with his wife out for a Friday afternoon drive. It was at a light and he looked over and smiled. Of course being nice I smiled back not thinking of anything. Light turns green and he takes off and is going through the entire gear WOT, and since I was doing that before I stopped at this light, so did I. It was amazing how fast I went past him all 5 cyclinders and a turbo making all the noises. I let off after half of second and began cruising. He slowly crawled past me with an amazed look on his face, and of course, I smiled again.
It was a good day:).

The road is pretty empty on the way back at midnight, there are rarely cops, and the R loves the Merritt.
Not that I condone that sort of behavior or anything.

Agreed, Boxsters are not girl cars and they are a blast to drive...
...but so are Miatas (MazdaSpeed or not).
It was most definitely not an S. The spoiler was up so I couldn't see the name, but it had a single outlet exhaust and didn't have the more aggressive exhaust note of the S.
-Eric

the boxsters...while having a lot less hp than our cars, aren't that slow b/c they are so much lighter. my dad's BASE model 2000 Boxster has somethign like 215hp..but it has decent power once it's in the upper revs...low end torque is lacking compared to our cars. the last time i drove it i gassed it at about 3000 rpm and my brain said "what the...." I was thinking 'why aren't i going anywhere"...then i remembered...oh yeah. this isn't MY car it's dad's car...
i've played with a few Boxster S - and they are pretty quick. a modded R would pull on them probabbly. the newer models have bumped up hp..so they might do alirhgt.... car mags claim the newer S models can do mid 13s....which woulc BEAT a stock R and even a mildly modded one...
i bet at speed - we'd pullon them. off the line, they probably launch better

I've killed a score of Boxsters, and the "S" model managed to escape via offramp as I was gaining on him.. Losting face is not an option for Porsche owners - even the lowly Boxsters.

Re: (23109VC)

When they first came out in '97 they made 201hp, but by '00 I'm pretty sure the base model was pumped up to 217hp.
The trickiest thing about the Boxster (to me, at least) is the clutch takeup which feels odd. Otherwise, I think they're fantastic cars. The base model is good for a mid-6 sec run to 60mph which is more than ample to make it fun, but where they really shine is around the corners.
I'm sure they launch better (no AWD bog, less weight) but I can definitely attest that, at speed, he wasn't going ANYWHERE...except behind me.
-Eric

I actually didn't sense any pride issues amongst the Porsche owners who were passed by Volvos at our recent local R lapping school session. I don't know if they were an aberration or not but I thought they were pretty cool and down to earth about it all (of course these weren't necessarily the most hardcore Porsche owners though.)

I always refer to these people as 'regulators.' They seem to think they're doing the world a favor by not letting anybody get up to the speed limit in the passing lane - all day long

Quote, originally posted by R_Rated »

I like to refer to these left lane slow movers as "polish road blocks"

They are too busy looking for the easy ticket...someone going a few miles over the speed limit.
This is one of the biggest differences between driving in the US and Germany. People don't hang out in the left lane. Better yet, they let you know with a preemptive flash they are planning on getting out of your way ASAP.

Eric, it must have been a Boxster and not an "S". I'm sure you wouldn't have treated an S so shabbily. I beleive the Cayman S has a few more HP than the Boxster S and I can tell you the Cayman S is pretty quick. According to Motortrend 0-60 in 4.8 sec.
Anyway I find myself still looks for the "R"s when I'm traveling, its amazing how much you appreciate the R when you see one and know what it is and what its capable of.
BUt now when I see an M3, I know I have a real chance at beating it.
