I have a 05 S40 (2.4I/ 5spd manual trans) with 26,000 miles. Within the last month I have had a tapping o whirring noise coming from the transmission. This noise only happened when the clutch pedal is completly released (and in neutral). The noise went away when the clutch pedal was fully pressed.
I took it to Boston Volvo twice and they kept saying that it is normal. The 3rd time I took it, I actually asked to speak with the foreman at their shop. He and I took my car out for a spin and he did hear it and he agree that it sounds like a worn out throw out bearing. He told me that he needed to drop the transmission to get to the clutch and the bearing. He told me that it was going to take a while.
My car has been on the shop since monday. Hopefully I'll get it back this week. Meanwhile I'm enjoying the XC90 loaner they gave me.
My question is: Am I the only one who has encountered this problem with the manual trans S40?
Cavv123

Re: Throw-out Bearing/clutch realase bearing (cavv123)

Oh, my good man.........if only you knew.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=44325
Not sure if the bearing was the root cause or not but it was quite a saga to fix.

Re: Throw-out Bearing/clutch realase bearing (cavv123)

OLDMAN replaced His clutch himself so He should know how long it takes to R&R the transmission but the throw-out bearing should only contact the pressure plate when the clutch is disengaged or starting to be disengaged. The sound You described, clutch engaged transmission in neutral sounds more like a transmission pilot bearing problem or transmission input shaft bearing problem. Either way the transmission has to come out....so the clutch is accessable.... I'm surprised a problem like this showed up with so few miles....

Re: Throw-out Bearing/clutch realase bearing (POWERSTROKE)

I posted on another thread about a sound i'm getting in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear while shifting AND accelerating that I think has to do with the clutch? It's a clicking, very soft but definitely audible when the windows are down and no music is playing. The best example I can come up with without posting a sound clip is tapping small rock or pebble on the assphalt. Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone have any ideas as so what this might be?
BTW: I didn't mean to hijack this thread!

Of course I'm sure this repair takes a long time but it never hurts to call and just check in. It could be a miscommunication and someone just forgot to call.

Re: (gdogg16)

it is an internal slave which AFAIK was used on Mazda trucks, then on my LS1 Camaro and they are POS and the trans needs to be taken out for any issues and most are imposible to bleed and oh they are spring loaded so they always ride on the plate fingers All in all a super bad design that is being used more and more to save a few bucks. On the LS1 Camaro that was and it was made of plastic and the "piston" was just an O ring
