Hello everyone. I drive a 2018 S90 T6. I bought the car CPO nine months ago at 23,000 miles. Today, the car has 37,000 miles. I am coming into the dealer soon for my 40,000 mile service, which I understand is an inspection of sorts and an oil change. The service seems basic and I have some questions...

1. My previous car's dealers inspected my car for free with an oil change. In doing so, they are "finding business" for themselves. Why am I paying $300 for an inspection with Volvo? Is this a rip off?
2. Aside from the oil change, is the 40,000 mile service that necessary? What am missing — is it not just a basic inspection?
3. What are the benefits to using a Volvo dealer over a good Euro car specialist mechanic?

Thanks ...

One benefit to using the dealer for your service is that if there is a software update they will be able to download it. Most euro shops will not be able to do this. If your car is otherwise operating correctly then you might not see a benefit to this. Another benefit is that there may be a better chance of the dealer going to bat for you for goodwill coverage if something fails just outside of warranty.

Most dealerships are pretty upfront about service costs, posted on their website and show exactly what's included in the 40k service. Compare that to your owner's manual and shop around to find the best deal for you. Realize that convenience (distance to where you live, availability of loaner cars) plays a role too, also your comfort level/confidence in the dealership staff. If you already have an established relationship with another shop then consider using them too.

The brake fluid flush is part of 40k. The software updates as Wayne said. Many dealers offer a loaner car at no charge, if that's the case, that can be a pretty nice value. Plus if anything happens outside of warranty, since you continued to service with Volvo you have some grounds for getting a good will repair.

Check your service manual what should be done at 40k. You can probably replace the cabin filter and engine air filter by yourself within 10 minutes so just order an oil change and brake fluid change. That should be around $300.

40k service both a 10k service + 20K service +brake flush so altogether oil change, topped off fluids, cabin filter, I think air filter too plus inspection and software if applicable. Agree with Dfrantz on ground for goodwill repairs. 300 for an inspection seems steep though. Its a $100 value at my location.

I am in the same boat and found a good Volvo shop around here in MA called Re-Volv - they're able to do everything and update software as well, so to me its a better value. Also agree about doing the filters yourself, I already swapped my engine filter and plan on doing the passenger one soon. Got both filters on RockAuto.

Well, stealerships in Texas will not update your software or navigation. I have asked two separate dealers and they say just download it yourself and then upload it. It (Navigation) is useless anyway just use your phone. LOL

Why would you expect them to spend their time updating your maps? We would have people ask but no one wanted to pay for it.

I mean every dealer is gonna be different. We update folks maps no charge. Our techs don't do it though. We have our drivers that take the car outside and run the USB in them. Since the drivers get paid hourly it's not a cost to us how we're set up.
